you walked through the multiple aisles in the convenience store, the fluorescent white lights on the ceiling blinding you. it was three in the morning. you should've been sleeping, but here you are, at seven eleven with a tired smile on your face.

blame the midnight cravings.

you walked along the memorized path to the candy section and grabbed all the lollipops, mentos, and gummies, not leaving a single one behind.

humming softly to yourself, you headed to the counter and dropped all the sweets on the table, the scattering sound surprising the cashier.

she was older than you and pretty, with long black hair tied up in a ponytail underneath the green hat of the uniform. "a-all of this?" she stuttered, looking up at you.

"yes, please," you said, smiling kindly as you took your f/c wallet from your pocket.

she then began to scan all the candies with the gun thingy cashiers have to scan the barcodes of items. "76 yen please."

"here~" you handed over the money and received the plastic bag containing all the candy. "thank you!"

"thank you as well, miss," she replied with a smile.

immediately after walking out of the convenience store's doors, you unwrapped a strawberry lollipop from the bag and popped it into your mouth. "yummy~" you mumbled.

"oi, look what we have here!" a hoarse, drunken man's voice reached your ears.
"a little lady, all out on her own at night!"

three middle-aged men came out of a nearby alley and started to surround you. you made a disgusted face, their breath smelled of alcohol.

"hey girl, why won't you come with us, hm?" one laughed, walking closer to you.

ew, i shouldn't have gone out this late, you thought, backing away. "stay away from me."

the bearded man on your right cackled. "look, she's tryna get us to stay away!"

out of the corner of your eye, another guy grabbed your wrist, holding you in place. you scowled. "let go."

"now why should i—"

three things happened at once:

a young boy with black hair and white headphones poofed outta nowhere.
he grabbed the man's wrist and pulled it away so that he'd let go of you.
you high-kicked the man's face and blood spurted from his nose.

both yours and the boy's eyes widened at each other's actions. the other two men stared at you like you were insane and ran away.

"pussies," the ravenette boy in front of you mumbled, eyeing the runaways.

"huh-? who are you?" you asked, not even bothering to glance at the man you kicked slump on the ground.

he looked at you properly, particularly at the pink cat-pattern pjs set hidden underneath your cardigan, then at your face. "...oh, you're...l/n?"

realization snapped at you. "oh! kaji-san, right?" you said. a warm smile made its way to your features. he was your classmate, in your last year of middle school. you stood slightly taller than him, even with only slippers and him wearing sneakers.

he nodded gingerly. "i was just going to seven eleven and saw you. are...you okay?"

"yup, i'm perfectly fine. they ran away so fast! i thought i'd have to fight," you said, hand at the back of your neck in embarrassment.

kaji was slightly stunned at the casualness of you just kicking some guy square in the face, but brushed it off anyway. the air grew awkward in silence. it was just you, him, and the unconscious body on the street.
