Daniel Keith never said a word after he hanged convict. At times, many men and women were convicted of felonious acts on less evidence than required even to bring a case to trial.
When an eight-year-old girl's dead body has been found as the sort of brutal murder, the citizens demanded for justice. Someone reported seeing Daniel Keith near the child's home on the day of her gruesome murder.
"I have killed nobody." Daniel Keith vowed. But many testified against Daniel.
Finally, Daniel is hanged. When a man is hanged on winter, it is said that his/her shadow hangs until the final leaf of autumn falls from the nearby trees. So many people traveled to Rutherford to see the shadow that clung to the south wall of the jail.
There, the people made a note of another curious happenstance. Along with the shadow of Daniel, there stood two people. Those two people were the lifelong resident of Rutherford, who were testified against Daniel during the trial in November 27, 1880.
And they were the last of those cursed by big Daniel, to die.
