It was a cold winter and snow was deep in the woods near the camp. There was plenty of game to be found if you were a good hunter, so the men won't go hungry.

Ryan was the best hunter in the camp. When Ryan set off for hunting, the cook slipped away from the camp. In the forest, Ryan mistook the cook and turned his rifle and shot him dead.

When Ryan returned to the camp alone, Ryan told his fellow lodgers that they have been attacked by a bear and the cook ran into the woods.

At sundown that night, the lodgers heard a terrible screaming coming from everywhere. The men recognized that the voice as that of the cook. The screams stopped abruptly as they started to search the cook.

The men searched again in the morning for the cook, but couldn't find. At dusk that night, the screams started again. At dusk every evening, for several weeks, the ghost of the cook shrieked out his terror and rage over his murder.

The ghost was not heard after the camp disbanded, but local residents are still subjected to the terrible screams of the Dungarvon Whooper.
