Still Monday Morning
Bringing my mug to my lips I took a small sip from my latte before placing it back down on the table and crossing my hands, "You need to tell me everything Giovanni and I do mean everything. They're going to be seeking the death penalty and with this being Texas it's a very high chance they can convince a jury to allow that."
"I am not guilty. I have told you everything."
Giovanni sat across from me in a room where it was only the two of us, I'd been sent in by my boss to try to get any other details to help his case.
We needed something to at least try to get him bail while we continued working. That was on the agenda for today.
His eyes were an ocean blue, but appeared red the more I looked into them. Had he been crying?
His face confused me, I could usually read people very well, especially defendants, but not him. He appeared guilty but innocent at the same time.
"Let's go over it again, your bail hearing is in less than an hour."
Slamming a fist onto the table he yelled, "I am not repeating this shit again! I shouldn't even fucking be in here this is ridiculous."
My face frowned as I stood over the table, "You will be rotting in here if you don't help us help you! You are going to repeat this shit as many times as it takes."
He put his hands on top of his head and looked at me with what looked to be fear in his eyes, "Look like I told you I was away on business. I came home it was late so I didn't go upstairs. I didn't want to wake them so I just laid on the couch figured I'd get up and check on them in the morning," he continued, "I wake up from this heavy ass sleep it's 1pm I don't hear anything or anyone so I immediately race upstairs and that's when I found them all. Dead. They had been shot."
"They were shot execution style," I added, "You are still missing a lot of details and I'll be honest hearing this isn't convincing me at all that you're not guilty."
Flying up from his chair he screamed, "I did not do this, I could never fucking harm my wife and children! What kind of monster do you fucking people think I am?"
"We are the only people in the world right now that are defending you, so you might want to sit the hell down and continue helping me go over this!," I yelled, standing from my seat as well.
A slight knock came onto the door before my boss walked in the room, "I'll take it from here Attorney Lennox. I got it go ahead and meet with the others we will be heading into court soon."
Gathering my items and thoughts I nodded as I straightened my skirt and silently stepped out of the room.
"Everything okay today?," one of the guards greeted as I walked past him towards the front of the building.
My head was in my phone but I looked up quickly enough to give him a small smile and wave.
I approached the rest of my team who were waiting at the entrance of the building, "Whitney went inside with him to take over, he was giving me the same stuff yet again."
"He doesn't seem to care at all about his own innocence," Sarah responded, she was one of our best defense attorneys in the firm.
Her dirty blonde hair was slicked back into a low bun, she ran her hand over it before rolling her eyes.
An assistant attorney named Jake chimed in on the conversation, "That's if he's innocent. This guy has not been convincing at all."
His face kept a smug expression which bothered me each time I glanced at it.
I glared and pointed a finger at him, "Look you are an assistant on this case you're here as a courtesy don't you dare speak that way about a client in a public area are you stupid?," I scoffed, "Our job is to defend our client who need I remind you has hired us to do that. Yes we need more information but we will work on it because that is ultimately our job."
"Yes ma'am. I'm sorry."
Hmmph. Men irritated my soul. Thank god I was lesbian and had been since as far back as I could remember.
Our boss approached us and advised she had gotten a few more details from Giovanni, "Still very vague so we have alot of work to do, but I might at the very least be able to get the bail approved."
Suddenly the door to the building opened, in came the smuggest person I'd ever met, Prosecutor Rafael Ortiz and his team.
A few of their faces were familiar from other court cases but one face specifically stood out to me, Zoey Allen.
Wow she really accepted a job with that scumbag Ortiz.
We had both attended the same college, but conclusively pursued different kinds of law.
She had chosen the prosecutor side and was very adamant about the importance of that to her.
In a mutual class of ours for a few mock cases we had actually faced off against one another, I had to admit she was good.
She is damn good, she will make an astonishing prosecutor but that just meant she would continue to be a pain in my ass.
We never held much of a conversation outside of the class discussions and mock cases, but I always had a strong feeling that she didn't like me.
Her face stiffened as she locked eyes onto me, if I was sensitive that kind of look might've made me cry.
I approached her fearlessly with my hand out, "Attorney Sapphire Lennox, and what was your name again?," of course I was going to act like I didn't remember her.
Clearing her throat and extending her hand to meet mine she responded, "Zoey Allen, prosecutor."
When our hands touched I felt a spark of electricity move through my body. I had never actually realized how stunning she was.
Her almond colored eyes that flawlessly matched her skin infatuated me.
Me staring at her must've freaked her out because she abruptly dropped my hand and nervously waved as she followed behind Ortiz.
"Familiar face to you?," my boss asked, waiting for my response.
Shit.
I stammered as I replied, "Something like that. We uh, well we went to college together."
She studied me before retaliating, "Let me remind you she is now a federal prosecutor, so whatever friendship you had is off the table. Am I clear?"
Her words came out ice cold.
I quivered internally, "There's no friendship, we barely spoke. I'm dedicated to this team and this case."
"Good. Let's get this bail over with," she smiled, opening the door to the courtroom.
We walked in and positioned ourselves on the defense side.
It's showtime.
