3 | Zoey

Monday Evening

After getting bail denied by the judge for the defendant my team and I decided to go out to a local hibachi restaurant for an early dinner.

We placed our food orders and shortly after received our drinks while we waited.

Rafael lifted his glass of Pinot Noir wine raising it towards the center of our table, "We did it. This is a great start to this case for us, we're going to have it closed and that monster behind bars in no time."

"Hell yeah this is a slam dunk," another one of the prosecutors replied, clinking his glass.

Bringing my glass towards his I softly tapped it before taking a sip.

Today actually had me excited for all that was to come, not just with this case specifically but in general my career itself had me ecstatic.

The energy in that courtroom I brung had been undeniable. I took lead and convinced the judge to not let the suspect be granted bail because of the flight risk.

It didn't take a lot of time because the defendant happens to be related to a major crime family here in the city.

His father had a record as long as a $300 grocery receipt, only reason he had gotten out of a lot of his charges was because of mistrials and him being wealthy.

There was no way I was going to let this man walk, not for that kind of crime. He was going down.

My daydreaming was interrupted by Glenda, "Zoey you did amazing taking lead today, you are without a doubt a natural."

My lips formed a small smile, "Thank you. I really appreciate that."

My nerves didn't get the best of me today and that was a good feeling. I had previously been in the courtroom several times as a student and assistant but this was my first as an actual prosecutor.

The lead I took had been powerful and straightforward, the defense team knew they would have to bring their best game when trial arrived.

Sapphire had been the one I faced off with today, which was ironic considering we always went at each other's throats in the mock trials we did in college.

She seemed to be sweaty and nervous, complete opposite of me.

That might've affected her delivery but even if she came harder the judge wasn't budging on the bail. Giovanni had entirely too many connections to be trusted to get out even if temporarily.

We would regroup with the defense team without him present in two weeks. This is when they would try to make a deal, but we were set on the death penalty.

Murdering a woman and children was absolutely horrific and unforgivable. The entire state was counting on us to close this and protect them from this kind of evil being released back into the normal world.

The server walked over to our table and begun handing us our meals, I felt my mouth watering.

Grabbing a fork I dug it into a piece of steak before lifting it to my mouth.

Throughout the day I had built up quite an appetite so I ordered steak and shrimp hibachi with a side of California rolls.

We continued discussing a few things about the case while all finishing up our meals.
