A week had gone by and surprise, it was my birthday.

Friday, October 1st.

Rolling over in my bed I reached onto the night stand and felt for my phone, when I grabbed and centered it in front of me I read the time.

7:02am

It didn't feel that early to me, but I had gone to bed extremely early last night so I was well rested.

I sighed out loud.

This last week at work had been exceedingly stressful to say the least.

In fact it was so tough on everyone at the firm that Rafael gifted us a 3-day weekend.

My birthday wasn't a big deal to me and since I didn't enjoy celebrating as it is me having the day off work just felt like a regular off day.

I'd cook myself breakfast, do some laundry, deep clean my apartment and just prepare for whatever crazy celebration my best friends had planned for this evening.

As I stood up from the bed I stretched my arms around and headed towards the bathroom.

After I finished brushing my teeth and washing my face I made my way down to the kitchen.

"Alexa play my R&B playlist," I yelled out.

When the first song started rolling out of the speaker I reached into my cabinets and fridge grabbing everything I'd need for breakfast.

Placing scrambled eggs in one pan and turkey bacon in another I moved onto my waffles. I'd invested in a Belgian waffle maker about a year ago and it had been a clutch purchase for sure.

After my food was done being cooked I plated it and grabbed a fruit cup and 20oz orange juice bottle out of the fridge.

This was going to be delicious.

"Alexa turn off."

When the music stopped I instantly turned my tv on, scrolled over and played the most recent episode of The Chi.

It was definitely binge worthy.

Taking a fork and butter knife I separated a few pieces of my waffles and dipped them in syrup.

I had just taken a few bites when I heard my doorbell ring.

It was literally only 8:00am sharp.

Rising from my chair I dragged my feet over to the front door, peering through the peephole I saw my mom, Monica and Andre.

Shit. Really y'all, this early?!

Not to mention I had no idea my mother was in town.

She moved to Miami, Florida two years ago and I hadn't seen her as much since then.

We did talk frequently but she often didn't want to come back here to Dallas due to my father's death and I just hadn't had enough time to get down to where she was.

Seeing her now is heartwarming. I was just shocked she hadn't spilled the fact she would be coming for my birthday.

She hadn't stopped asking about it the last couple months so maybe that should've been obvious.
