I watched Cat make her way over. Two girls invited Cat to sit with them, but she politely declined before sitting next to me. I felt my heart skip a beat, and decided not to tell her she gives me heart palpitations whenever she even gets near me.

For Nevers, lunch was a kale and cucumber salad with roast chicken and blueberry bran muffins- with an assorted greens smoothie which I was scared to sip.

For Evers, it was a chicken pot pie, an apple/pomegranate side salad, a cherry tart that smelled delicious, and a water with a lemon. Cat saw me eying her tart and passed it to me. "I want the muffin," she ordered me. I silently passed the muffin to her, and she bit into it. "That isn't half-bad," she mumbled through the mouthful, nodding thoughtfully.

"So," she began after swallowing her muffin, "Apparently, the Storian is the most powerful object in this world. It's a pen that-"

"I know," I interjected. "Sophie brought me to see it."

Cat looked up, confused. "Why?"

I hesitated. Because she didn't want me going AWOL with you, he wanted to say, but he knew that would only end in disaster. "Um... school project."

Cat obviously wasn't satisfied with that answer.

I stood up. "It's useless anyways," I mumbled. "It can't open crazy portals."

not the end of chapter yet, but I'm going to do a switch to 3rd-person.

Connor stared Cat down for only a few moments more before turning heel and leaving to go sit with his roommates, Tristan, Lance, and Rat.

***

During Special Talents, Professor Sheeba Sheeks had them display their special talents. Rat's special talent was his uncanny speed. Tristan could set his hair on fire and somehow not burn himself alive (it didn't work with any other part of his body). Lance could wield a sword at an inhuman level of expertise.

Connor thought hard about his own. He had options. He was a light fairy after all.

But... there was one option that was better than all the others.

"Connor!"

Connor stood, and let his wings go.

Neon-yellow dragonfly wings unfurled, glowing with the light of a thousand angels. He wasn't a particularly powerful fairy, but somehow his wings were bright.

That's not normal.

Sheeks and the rest of the class stared in fascination.

Connor furled his wings again and sat down, letting them stare. "Happy?" he asked Sheeks.

Sheeks just went on to the next student, half shell-shocked.
