chapter seventy-four: an old friend
"So this is book club, huh? Nancy?" Diego asked his wife sarcastically as he pulled the van up to the curve.
Nova couldn't help but roll her eyes at her friend's pettiness. Luckily, the Perez girl had slept for the majority of the drive back to town so she didn't have to listen to their arguments the entire time they were on the road.
"Oh, shut up, Diego," Lila rolled her eyes in response.
Diego hadn't even turned off the engine before Nova was throwing open the back door. She didn't want to deal with their marital squabbles anymore. A shiver ran through the girl's body and she hugged her arms close to her chest when the cold air hit her skin. She really hated the winter. Nova was just counting down the days until it would be warm again.
"If they're going to be like this the whole time I think I'd rather go with Team Reggie," Nova grumbled quietly to Five. Annoyance dripped from her words as she glared back at the couple.
"No, you don't," Five sighed before he lightly placed his hand on Nova's lower back and began to guide her into the building. "Come on."
"You're right. Fuck Hargreeves," Nova muttered and the boy chuckled quietly in response.
Despite her annoyance, curiosity was getting the better of Nova. Her eyes quickly moved around the area as Five led her up a twisting creaky staircase. It was a typical apartment building. A bit run down but structurally seemed sound enough to the girl. She was honestly most curious to see what kind of office/meeting space the Keepers had. It clearly wasn't a lavish mansion like the one Destiny's Children met in and it wasn't a grand office building like where the Commission was stationed.
"Ladies and Diego, welcome to the Keeper's HQ courtesy of Gene and Jean," Five said as he gestured to the locked door at the top of the staircase. "Nove, care to do the honors."
Nova just shrugged her shoulders in response before reaching into her winter coat and pulling out the simple lock-picking kit that she always carried. The others watched with interest as the young woman kneeled in front of the lock and got to work. Not even five minutes later the click of the lock sounded around them and Nova turned the nob before pushing open the door.
"You know, it's a little scary how efficiently you did that. Do you always carry a lock-picking kit?" Diego asked uneasily as Nova rose to her feet and dusted off her pants.
"Yeah, of course. Why?" Nova asked curiously as she tilted her head to the side slightly.
"But like why?" Diego asked.
"For situations like this, I guess," Nova shrugged before she carefully put her kit back into her coat. "You never know when you're going to commit a little B&E."
"I suppose you do have a good point," Diego nodded thoughtfully.
"Jesus, I hate to break up this rivetting conversation but can we get a move on it, please?" Lila scoffed while rolling her eyes before she pushed between the two and entered the apartment.
