"It is out of the question, Grace." He says it so blunt and casually, cutting into his chicken.
"But they need my help, Jamie."
"But have you leave the farm for an unknown amount of time? That is just absurd." She can hear the rising anger in his tone.
"I would be getting paid and if you're worried about upkeep of the farm then we could hire someone to work."
"Grace, no," he says sternly but she cannot let him win this. Just this once it might be nice to do something away from here.
"Jamie, I want to go. I am going."
He jumps from his seat and slams the table with his fist, "you are not going! End of fucking story, Grace!"
She does not back down and stands just as he is, "You cannot control every aspect of my life! I have been a slave to your home for years with nothing more to gain but an ungrateful and stupidly childish husband—!"
He stomps around the table and grabs her by her neck, slamming her against the wall behind her.
She pulls at his hands.
"I have done nothing but provide for you, you are the one who is ungrateful!"
She can hardly see anything, her fingers are scratching at his hands but at some point she loses feeling in them. She chokes out for him to stop. When he does not she kicks him in his groin and he drops her with a yelp.
"You bitch!" He is about to grab her again but the sight of her hunched form gasping for air pulls him from his madness.
Guilt overwhelms him and he reaches to touch her but she steps away, "Grace? Grace, I am sorry I am not myself, you must forgive me, you just upset me."
"Do not come near me," she croaks out in a raspy voice.
His pitiful gaze lowers, "I will do anything, I am sorry for my mistake, honestly."
She stands to her full height with her hand still clutching her throat, "let me go to Massachusetts to help Dr. Jordan."
She knows that he will agree. He can never hurt her without making up for it. Nothing makes up for it but he believes it does. He shoves his guilt down her throat and forces forgiveness out.
"Yes, anything!" He says it like it is such a grand gesture, like the inconvenience of letting her leave will justify all he has done to her.
"Then I will depart within the week." She says through gritted teeth and walks out of the room.
