More Lies

Y/N sat on her bed watching the others. Bob switched shifts with Glenn but before that Bob had tried to talk to her more, she'd pretended to be asleep. Now she waited on her bed, the train car slowly being illuminated from the slim gaps in the door frame. Y/N rested her head against the wall while she mouthed her mantra.

    I am alive
    I am not free
    My name is Y/N

    I had a family
    I lost my family
    I'm in danger

Y/N silently said small facts to herself over and over, trying to keep some part of her routine going. Some of the others started stirring until one by one they all woke up. Finally there was enough light in the car to start reading her book but that meant she had to go and sit by the door and use the beams of light. She didn't want to be closer to these people, she didn't want to get to know them at all so she stayed in her corner repeating her mantra over and over again.

"Tonight we could try to pull the door open," Tara said, she stood up and walked to the sliding metal door. "There's just enough space to stick something in here and leverage it open!"

Yeah until the guards hear you or the tray snaps, Y/N rolled her eyes at them. She'd tried that before with her metal tray (which was the only thing in the car to use) and all she did was bend it.

"It's worth a shot," Glenn's voice interrupted their pondering silence. Tara started nodding along. "Tonight, closer to midnight, we could try. The fence is only thirty yards away, so it's a straight shot."

"Well depending on what patrol they have set up," Sasha said. She looked cynical. Y/N started to tune them out, she knew every inch of this damned train car and you would need a crow bar to even attempt prying the door open. Though that wasn't the only way in. Y/N's eyes glanced up to the hatch on the ceiling but she quickly looked away not wanting to draw attention to it.

"Smith!" Abrahams voice bounced off the metal walls. Y/N snapped her head up at him, shock and anger spiking through her. She hated when people yelled especially when it came from no where, it just set her on edge. "Do you know when the guards come? How do they-

"I don't know!" Y/N snapped. She surprised herself with how much venom she put into that. "I've only been here a week!"

"Show some respect," Abrahams jaw clenched to the point a vein in his temple throbbed. "I'm on a mission that could save your very life!"

Y/N scoffed. "What are you, G. I. Joe?"

    "Listen you little shit-

"Abraham!" Glenn stepped between them. His hand raised to stop Abraham from doing anything more. Glenn leaned closer to him and murmured so Y/N couldn't hear. "She's just a kid, she's scared just like the rest of us. She doesn't even know why it's so important for us to get out of here, why don't you tell her so she understands. Right now she's our only way out of this."

Abraham stared down at Glenn before brushing his hand off and stepping towards Y/N. "What I'm about to tell you is top secret information-

"Aw, give me a break," Y/N muttered under her breath, she looked like she was dealing with lunatics.

Abraham continued albeit with more anger, "Eugene has the cure for all of this. Every dead piece of shit that roams around out there wont exist anymore! People will stay dead when they die, when Eugene gets to Washington we'll all be saved."

He spoke the words with a fervor that almost made Y/N believe him, but she also felt a splurge of other emotions. She actually stood up and looked at Eugene, anxiety spiking through her. "What company did you work for?"

They all looked taken aback by her question but Eugene was quick to say, "The U.S. Govern-

"No," The seriousness of her tone and stance once again shocked them all. "What. Company. Did. You. Work. For?"

A confused silence settled around them. Eugene started naming official titals and offices within U.S. government but Y/N shook her head in frustration before turning around and sitting back in her bed.

"Why do you ask that, Smith?" Glenn leans down to her eye level from where he's standing.

Y/N couldn't answer, that answer would reveal everything.

"Didn't you say you were here for two weeks?" Bob stood off to the side watching Y/N.

"What?" Rosita said as she spun towards him, her hand on her hip. She raised an eyebrow at his abrupt subject change.

"Yesterday she said she was here for two weeks but just a bit ago Smith said one," Bob explained. To the others this seemed unimportant but the tension between Bob and Y/N kept them quiet and curious. "So which is it?"

"Like two weeks," Y/N shook her head and shrugged her shoulders. "I didn't count the days."

"How long ago did your kidnappers die?" Bob asked again. The others looked around at each other in confusion.

"What kidnappers?" Tara spoke up. Glenn looked between Bob and Y/N trying to figure out what this was about. Now Y/N was standing again, she was surprised to find she felt a small twinge of hurt that Bob would say anything about what she shared with him last night.

"It's strange that your already eating human meat after only being here for two weeks," Bob said, ignoring Tara. Y/N's cheeks felt cold as the blood left her face, why was she such a bad liar? Or better yet why was Bob literally Inspector Gadget? "The meat you ate yesterday could be one of your kidnappers. Why would you eat it?"

"I-it was my first meal in days and you guys wanted me to share-

"Are you from Terminus?!" Abraham asked his cheeks hot with anger, not fully understanding what Bob was getting at or saying but trusting his intuition. "Are you spying on us?"

"I'm so confused," Tara muttered but they all heard her. Suddenly loud gunshots and hollering broke out. Y/N instinctively crouched down with her arms over her head. The others rushing to the door to try and peer through the gaps. Nothing happened inside the car for a good five minutes as every one listened to what was happening outside. The shots got closer and closer until Gareth's voice rang through the air.

"Drop your weapons now!" Y/N finally stood up since the gunfire had stopped. Surprise shot through her when she heard Gareth instructing them to go to her train car. Wouldn't he want less people around me? Fear entered the mix when she pondered if Gareth thought her useless and decided to eat her instead. "Ring Leader go now or the boy dies! . . . Now the archer. Now the Samurai!"

The others backed away from the entrance as footsteps could be heard crunching the gravel right outside the door.

"My son!?" A deep gravely voice yelled from outside the door. Y/N held her breath waiting to hear Gareth's reply. A pause of silence then:

"Go kid," Gareth said dismissively. A breath of relief left Y/N glad the kid would live, even if for a few more hours. Gareth shouted more instructions and soon the door was squeaking open. Y/N stood in the corner her back pressed to the wall. She watched as a man entered the train, he had an intimidating presence about him but so did the other two adults that followed him inside. Two men and a woman, she expected the little kid she had been picturing in her head to walk in but instead a boy around her age stepped through the doorway, his hat creating a unique shadow on the wall. Then the door slid closed.
