Mended Souls

Korn's POV

It wasn't that difficult not to notice him for me. Yes, as part of the student committee, a president at that, it was my duty to host or at least to pretend to be interested in wanting to host the new incoming college students' orientation. It was a tradition seeded deeply in this country's culture. Orientation if you want to make it sound nicer but amongst the students, we refer to it as the hazing week. You can call it legal and approved "bullying" in moderation.

I always hated the part where it was the seniors' turn to be mean deliberately to the juniors. I don't understand it when I went through it myself. I didn't see how being mean on purpose sometimes to the extend on making anyone cry was part of the bonding process but like always, I sucked it up and did what I had to, both to survive the social hierachy of this college and to fullfill what my father set me out to do. This place was father's alma mater you see. I don't hate coming here but I also didn't exactly have a choice. Joined the same course as the old man and made myself go through it, grinding until I make it, even if I have to pay to make the grades happen. I did what father wanted to. Exact enough, I hope.

Keeping the facade of what my father groomed me from young was the only thing that got me through everything. He was right. Whether I liked it or not, it was not about me. It was the bigger picture. Always the bigger picture. That was why I was here at the orientation for 300 students.

It was to keep the facade of my reputation as the college president, one of the top and most sucessful, not to mention good looking college president set to do wonderful things after graduation. If anyone bothered asking me, I rather be a nobody. A nobody who was free to live without any forms of expectations but preferably with the love and support of a family. I don't say I have them but I never felt like I had them either. Complicated, I know.

That was why, it was easy to spot him from the big crowd. He was hidden pretty far back but my eyes caught him, point on. A tiny looking boy, just two years youngers than I was but when I checked his record, he was in fact three, not two, younger than I was. Apparently he was one of the scholarship students under my dad's foundation with its sole purpose was to evade tax. Yeah, that much I know since I was studying business as well.

His name is Tonkla Anuwat with a surname that didn't help elavate his background of course. From his record, he was a top student from his school who skipped years because he was smart. He does look smart but also tiny. Like a mouse. The desire to squeeze him started brewing in me.

The first few days of the orientation, I never spoke a word to him but I would look for him every time orientation time started. I was always curious to see him walk in, wondering what kind of gloomy negative expression he will show next. Does it makes sense when I said he looked beautiful even when he looked sad and somewhat broken? Logic tells me, a young boy with his background plus his always gloomy aura doesn't hint that he came from a happier family background.

I found myself more motivated to come to the orientation as days passed. Finally it was one of the cliche activity that I was looking for. The senior signature treasure hunt. If you watch enough Thai series, you will probably see this in a lot of youth dramas. Juniors going around asking seniors for signatures. Some seniors might demand you to do ridiculous things like sing ths ever silly Fried Chicken song or push ups or whatever.

My committee members warned me to not give them easy passes. They reminded that I was the president and I should be a little bit more stricter since it will help establish my reputation for the next few months to come. If I could be honest with them, I would tell them, whatever. My father's money secured my position firm enough for me to be the president for the next ten years if I ever have to stay but of course, after school, I am set to work with my father and gradually take over our conglomerate business. Father, he always said, lead with a smile. I don't have to mean the smile but it was a smile that will move the world he said.
