Andover, New Jersey
In My Jail Cell
Chapter V
Time slipped away slowly as I stared at the ceiling. Shadows shifted to different parts of the room as time passed. Then eventually day turned to night, and I saw the stars peek out and twinkle in the black ink they called the sky. I desperately wanted to go to sleep. But the girl -Lydia -haunted my thoughts. The mystery of her past and purpose of helping me kept me awake like puzzle pieces waiting to be put together. I tried to analyze everything I knew about her, but I figured out that I absolutely knew nothing. She has black hair, dresses normally, and has mood swings that give me whiplash. I would have called her cute. Wait, what am I talking about?
I let my thoughts wander aimlessly in circles as I sighed. There was no clock in my jail cell so I had no idea what time it was. I sat up and climbed off my broken bed. My shoes squeaked as I walked toward the cracked sink and looked at my reflection. My messy dirty blonde hair looked like a tornado had run through it. I had an angular jaw with dull ashen gray eyes. My clothes were all wrinkled and crumpled, representing all my stress and problems I have yet to solve.
My stay at Andover was not turning out well.
I had already been arrested and late for my first day of school, and it seemed that I had made a friend –wait, correction. Ally- that was very untrustworthy.
I cupped my hands under the running faucet and splashed some cold water on my face to wake myself up, but it only made me sleepier. Looking around, I found no paper towels or anything for me to use to dry off, so I ripped a couple of toilet papers and used those. I turned the water off, but small droplets dripped still. Drip, drip, drip… Each droplet was like one grain of sand falling down an hourglass. I placed both of my hands on the sides of the sink, and I heard a crackling noise. What the he-
And I was in a pile of ceramic pieces. The sink was so old and worn-out that it had tore from the wall from my added weight. I didn’t even have the strength to scream or cry from my anger and frustration. I was covered from head to toe in a white powder and this green stuff was against the wall, underneath where the sink was. Mold.
“What am I supposed to do now?” I asked myself. So I did nothing, I sat there for a couple of hours. I bet it was actually only ten minutes…
When I was about to lie down on the shattered sink beneath me, I heard Lydia’s voice. Just the thought of her brought shivers and shudders up my spine.
“Miss me?” she said flirtatiously. I looked at her upside down and what I saw surprised me. She was dressed in all black and looked like a burglar. She even had a ski mask to hide her face.
“Umm… I thought we were just going to look at computer files?” I said aghast. I thought she kind of looked hot… the top hugged her curves, while her pants flattered her long legs. I felt warmth rush up my cheeks and I averted my gaze. This was no time to think about my male hormones. Auntie Jenny taught me better than that.
“Ha! Aren’t you funny? Of course we’re going to look at computer files, but being dressed up makes it more exciting!” Lydia said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Then she threw some fabric at me. “That’s your ski mask, you know there are cameras.” I took the mask gratefully and she helped me up from the pile of the ruined sink. Her hand was cold to the touch and as gentle as the beat of a bird’s wings.
