FOURTY FIVE

The bathroom was filled with a tense silence as Earn sat on the edge of the bathtub, staring at the pregnancy test in her hand. Her heart was racing, her breath shallow, and the world outside seemed to disappear as all her focus remained on the tiny window. The seconds felt like hours, each tick of the clock echoing in her mind.

Lada's voice called out from the bedroom. "Earn, are you okay in there?"

Earn swallowed hard, her throat dry. "Y-Yeah, just... just a minute!"

Her fingers trembled as she kept her eyes locked on the test. This was it. A whole year of trying, waiting, and hoping had led to this moment. She'd taken so many tests before, each one ending in disappointment. But something about this time felt different. Her body felt different.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the faintest line began to appear. Her breath hitched. Was she imagining it? Earn leaned in closer, her heart pounding even harder as the line grew more solid.

Earn blinked, her eyes widening as the realization sank in. Positive.

"Oh my God..." she whispered, her voice barely audible as tears pricked the corners of her eyes.

Lada knocked on the door again, a bit more concerned now. "Earn, are you sure everything's fine? You're being really quiet."

Earn felt her hands shake as she stared at the test, her heart overflowing with emotions she couldn't even begin to describe. She wanted to cry, laugh, and scream all at once. But more than anything, she wanted to share this moment with Lada.

With shaky hands, she opened the bathroom door, and Lada was standing right there, worry etched on her face. "What's going on in there?"

Earn couldn't speak. She simply held up the test in front of Lada, her eyes wide and brimming with tears.

Lada's gaze dropped to the small piece of plastic, and for a second, she didn't react. Then her eyes darted back up to meet Earn's. "Wait... is that...?"

Earn nodded, her voice trembling. "It's positive, baby. We're pregnant."

For a moment, everything was still. And then, Lada's face broke into the biggest smile Earn had ever seen. "We're pregnant?" she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper as the words sank in.

Earn's lip quivered as she nodded again, and that was all it took. Lada's arms were around her in an instant, pulling her close, their bodies pressed together in a tight embrace. Lada buried her face in Earn's neck, her voice muffled by tears. "We're going to have a baby..."

Earn held onto her tightly, feeling the warmth of Lada's body against hers, the reality of what was happening hitting her in waves. "I can't believe it," Earn whispered, her own tears finally spilling over. "After all this time... it's happening."

Lada pulled back slightly, cupping Earn's face in her hands, her eyes shimmering with joy. "You did it, Earn. We're going to be moms."

Earn let out a shaky laugh, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. "We're going to be moms," she repeated, the words tasting so sweet as they left her lips.

Lada kissed her forehead, then her cheeks, then finally her lips, lingering for a moment. When she pulled away, her voice was filled with awe. "I can't wait to tell Narin. She's going to be over the moon."

Earn laughed, her excitement bubbling up now that the initial shock had worn off. "She's been begging for a sibling for so long. I can already hear her screaming with joy."

Lada's smile softened, her thumb tracing the line of Earn's jaw. "You've been so strong through all of this, love. Every disappointment, every time you got your hopes up... and now look. We're here."
