The weather was perfect, ideal for a stroll to enjoy the crisp December afternoon air.
"Tofu!" Charlotte called out, and the sound of four eager paws pattering across the linoleum filled the room, making her smile.
Moments later, Tofu barked nearby, signaling her readiness to join Charlotte on their walk. Kneeling down, Charlotte reached for her dog. Tofu seemed to understand, walking over to sit obediently in front of her.
Charlotte stroked Tofu's soft fur, smiling. "Care to accompany me to the park, girl?"
Tofu responded with an enthusiastic bark, prompting a chuckle from Charlotte.
"Thanks, Tofu. Now, could you fetch your leash?"
With another excited bark, Tofu dashed off and returned in seconds, leash in her mouth. She dropped it at Charlotte's feet, who quickly took it and fastened it around Tofu.
Stepping outside, the afternoon breeze kissed Charlotte's face like a hint of cinnamon, instantly brightening her mood.
Tofu tugged at the leash, urging her to walk faster than usual, clearly excited for their destination.
"Easy, girl. We don't want to trip," Charlotte said, and Tofu slowed, barking as if to say, yes, Mommy!
Charlotte felt immense gratitude for Tofu. Without her loyal companion, she knew she wouldn't be able to enjoy her daily walks anymore. She loved the rhythm of walking, especially on warm, breezy afternoons like this--perfectly comfortable without being humid or too cold.
It had been a year since the tragic accident that took her brother's life and left her permanently blind. After hearing from the doctor that her sight was gone forever, Charlotte nearly succumbed to despair. How could she navigate life without vision? How could she continue living when she couldn't even see herself?
For a time, she believed she should have died in that accident, feeling that surviving was a cruel punishment she didn't deserve.
But everything changed when her eldest brother, Chan, gifted her Tofu eight months ago. Suddenly, life felt bearable again. It became livable.
The first time her fingers brushed against Tofu's fur, it felt like destiny. Tofu was meant for her, a comforting presence that made her feel safe.
"Tofu's going to be your new eyes, Charlotte," Chan had said, and he was right. Tofu became her guiding light, helping her navigate the world, even without her sight.
Charlotte carefully sat on the park bench and folded her white cane, inhaling the earthy scent of the surroundings. She loved the smell of damp earth and grass, especially after a rain, as it brought her a sense of tranquility.
Tofu settled at her feet, resting her head on them, and Charlotte smiled at the sweet gesture.
"Why don't you go play, Tofu? Mommy will be right here," she encouraged, feeling Tofu perk up at her words.
Tofu barked in response, "Yes, Girl, you can play!" Charlotte chuckled, delighted by her dog's enthusiasm.
Moments later, she felt Tofu dash away, filling the air with joyful energy.
After a peaceful moment enjoying the afternoon air, Charlotte heard Tofu bark, but this time it sounded different--eager and playful. A furrow crossed her brow, quickly replaced by a smile as she imagined Tofu finding a fellow playmate.
