AVA
The bottles, the table, great music and time with my brother began turning my mindset around. As I reconnected with old friends, I began to realize ever since I started ReGenisis, it had become my life. It felt good to laugh and let my hair down.
As night drifted into wee hours of the morning, Brock, a childhood friend, drifted closer to me. Leaning towards my ear, he mumbled.
"It's good to see you."
Tipsy, I leaned towards him to reply. "It's even better to see you. How've you been?"
"Lonely." He answered.
"Well, that makes two of us."
"We can change that if you like."
Sharply turning my head in his direction, I chuckled.
"You don't waste time do you?"
"Hell no." He answered. "Shit, we both grown, let's act like it."
His approach, though brash, I could respect.
"We go way back, Ava. And you know from the moment we played doctor in your backyard, I've wanted you."
Recalling the memory, I laughed out loud before responding.
"I do know that. And I also know Reggie beat the shit out of you when he found you trying to convince me to let you give me a 'gina' exam like your daddy did his patients."
"Yeah, he tore my ass up, but it was worth a shot wasn't it?"
Leaning into his shoulder, I looked up, then answered. "It was because I'm definitely overdue for an exam. You still got the skills?"
"In real life, yes. Following in my old man's footsteps has gained me a lot of practice. But tonight, with you, I want to be highly unprofessional."
Well, damn.
Eager to finish what we started years ago, I excused myself to freshen up before dipping out. Pleased Reggie's studio above the club was only available to me, I made my way inside to handle my business. Ignoring my buzzing phone, I cleaned up, then locked the door before turning to stroll back down the staircase.
With each step, my body tingled with excitement. I had no expectations for the upcoming events other than releasing stress which made the endeavors all the more intriguing.
"I thought that was you."
Focusing on the the outline of the person standing in the middle of the dimly lit landing, I paused, reaching into my clutch for my pepper spray.
"No need for that." He urged. "I just wanted to say hello."
Moving closer to the voice, I stopped two steps above him.
"JL, what are you doing?"
"Apparently the same as you, trying to get out of here."
"This isn't the way."
I brushed past JL, hoping to lose him as I cut through the dense crowd. I didn't. Spinning with him on my heels, I demanded beneath the band's soulful tunes.
"What the hell do you want?"
"To talk to you face to face."
"About business?"
"No."
"Then you have nothing to say."
He gripped my arm to keep me from walking off.
"I miss you."
Fuuuuck. Why bother me with his concerns? Brock spotted me, waving as he smiled. I needed to go.
