Smut Warning:
Two months later
"Miss Ainbridge, please do come in," the man in the expensive tailored suit stood in the doorway of the law firm and grinned professionally at Judith as she sat anxiously in the reception.
Take a seat, please," the man insisted.
Judith followed him into his chic office and admired the the certificates and diplomas on the wall. She read out his name plaque on the desk, "Mr Billington?" He smiled in reply and Judith continued. "I've received your letter. Tell me please, what is this about?"
"May I call you Judith?" Mr Billington waited for the polite nod. "Judith, I'm going to cut to the chase." He pulled out a large envelope from his top drawer. "I am responsible for the legal department of the Sumner estate including property, assets and finances."
Judith was confused. "Ok," she replied distrustingly.
"It seems you have a benefactor who has chosen you to inherit a small fortune of the estate. Someone in the Sumner household must have taken a real shine to you."
"Inherit? What? I don't get it," Judith adjusted her glasses and shook her head.
"There was a young woman of the Sumner family who sadly passed away way before your time. In fact, she owned the house that you rented for a period in 2024."
"Julie," Judith murmured but the solicitor did not hear her.
"You must have looked after the property well because the unnamed benefactor from the Sumner estate has legally passed that property down to you. Congratulations, you now own the two-bed property up in Loughborough."
"I own it?"
"Yes, and that's not all. Your unnamed benefactor is also donating the late Sumner's entire net worth to you. £123,000. Again congratulations."
Judith's mouth dropped, "Excuse me? Who is my benefactor? Why am I receiving this? I have no idea who this person is... Or was." Although she knew that was a lie, she also knew he would not make sense of her sleeping with a ghost.
"I'm afraid they are remaining anonymous. I have just been instructed through documents to ensure this estate is passed down to you smoothly and legally."
That's a lot of money. Who were you in your life, Julie? Judith thought dryly. "I still can't come to terms with this. You can't tell me anything else?"
The solicitor leaned forward, still smiling. "There is just one condition for the benefactory. The Sumner estate is very fond of one Mr Lyle Watkins, a retired paramedic who currently resides at the Sunny Hill care home. He is covering the costs of his own living arrangements but they are insistent that you take care of him and his needs and visit him regularly."
"Lyle? I do know him."
"Wonderful news, then it is agreed." Mr Billington pointed to several boxes on the documents before Judith, "Please sign here, here and here... Excellent, I will get everything finalised for you and you can expect to see the finances in two to four weeks. In the meantime, here are two sets of keys for the property. There are two more sets with the current tenants, Mr and Mrs Fitzpatrick. The maintenance documents will be sent to your home address."
Judith had so many questions and feelings regarding the inheritance and she still could not believe her fortune, but Mr Billington seemed eager to move along and end the conversation. Content with his attitude, Judith promptly smiled and said goodbye and the solicitor showed her out of the office.
A hundred K? The words echoed around her mind. "Julie, I love you," she whispered to the air.
