Raven stood in front of the mirror, staring at her reflection. She couldn't tear her gaze away from the things that set her apart—the amethyst eyes that seemed to glow in the dim light, her violet hair that framed her pale face, and her porcelain skin that always made her look like she belonged to some distant, unreachable world.
She sighed softly, running her fingers through her hair, tugging at a strand as though that could somehow change how she felt. She had never been one to care too much about her appearance, but today, everything felt overwhelming. The comments from strangers, the comparisons to others—especially to Starfire with her vibrant orange skin and beautiful green eyes—had seeped into her thoughts, making her feel... different. Out of place.
Raven took a deep breath and turned away from the mirror, feeling that familiar gnawing insecurity creeping up inside her. She had been wrestling with the thoughts all day, trying to push them away, but they just wouldn't leave. She hated this feeling—this doubt—but it was growing louder in her mind.
Beast Boy was in the living room, flipping through a comic book on the couch, his usual carefree expression on his face. Raven hesitated for a moment in the doorway, her arms wrapped around herself as if she could shield herself from the vulnerability of what she was about to ask. She wasn't used to seeking reassurance, but this time, she couldn't silence the doubt on her own.
"Gar," she called softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
He looked up instantly, his green eyes brightening as they landed on her. He tossed the comic aside, sitting up straight. "Hey, Rae. What's up?"
Raven walked over slowly, her movements hesitant, and sat down beside him. She didn't meet his eyes right away, choosing instead to stare at the floor, her fingers nervously playing with the edge of her sleeve.
"I've been... thinking," she started, her voice uncharacteristically uncertain. "About... changing a few things."
Beast Boy raised an eyebrow, confused. "Changing? What do you mean?"
Raven finally looked up at him, her violet eyes searching his face for any hint of judgment, though she doubted she would find any. Still, the fear lingered.
"My... features," she said quietly. "My eyes, my hair, my skin. I feel like... like I stand out too much. I don't look like anyone else. And I've been thinking about getting contacts, maybe dyeing my hair... even getting a tan."
The moment the words left her lips, she regretted saying them. It felt wrong, somehow, to voice those thoughts out loud. But the insecurities had been gnawing at her for too long, and she couldn't keep them in anymore.
Beast Boy's face softened, and he tilted his head, clearly surprised by her words. "You want to change how you look?"
Raven nodded slowly, her fingers tightening around her sleeve. "I just... feel out of place sometimes. Like I'm not... normal." She cast her eyes down again. "I don't know. Maybe I'd feel better if I didn't stand out so much."
For a moment, there was silence, and Raven felt her heart sink. She wasn't sure what she expected him to say, but the quiet made her feel exposed, like she had just shown him a part of herself that she wasn't ready to share.
But then, Beast Boy reached out, gently placing a hand under her chin and lifting her face so she had no choice but to look into his eyes. His gaze was warm, filled with understanding, but there was also a hint of disbelief, like he couldn't believe she was even considering such a thing.
"Raven," he said softly, his voice steady and kind. "You're perfect the way you are."
She blinked, her breath catching in her throat at his words. "Perfect?" she echoed, not quite believing him.
"Yeah," Beast Boy said firmly. "Your eyes, your hair, your skin—everything about you is you. It's what makes you beautiful."
Raven's heart skipped a beat, and she looked at him, searching his expression for any sign that he was just saying those things to make her feel better. But there was no hesitation in his voice, no doubt in his eyes. He meant every word.
"But..." she started to argue, her voice small, "I don't look like everyone else. I'm so... pale, and my hair—"
"Exactly," Beast Boy interrupted, shaking his head. "You don't look like everyone else, and that's what makes you stand out. You're unique, Rae. No one else has those amazing purple eyes, that gorgeous hair, or that flawless skin."
Raven frowned slightly, not used to hearing herself described in such a way. "But people—"
"Screw what people say," Beast Boy cut in, his tone suddenly more serious. "People can be stupid. I've heard them, too, but they don't know you. They don't see what I see."
Raven looked at him, her heart pounding in her chest. "And what do you see?"
Beast Boy's face softened again, and he reached out, gently brushing a strand of her violet hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered on her cheek, his thumb brushing against her skin in a way that made her pulse race.
"I see the most beautiful woman I've ever met," he said, his voice low and sincere. "I see someone who's strong, who's smart, and who's more than just her looks. But even if we're talking about looks... Rae, you're breathtaking. I love your eyes. I could get lost in them. Your hair—it's like the night sky. And your skin..." He trailed his fingers down her cheek, his voice dropping to a whisper. "It's perfect. Just like you."
Raven felt her face heat up at his words, and for a moment, she was at a loss for what to say. She had never been good at receiving compliments, especially ones so heartfelt, but there was something about the way Beast Boy looked at her—like she was the only person in the world that mattered—that made her insecurities seem so... small.
"Gar..." she breathed, her voice barely audible.
He smiled softly, leaning closer to her. "Rae, I love you exactly as you are. You don't need to change a single thing. Not for me, not for anyone."
Raven stared into his eyes, her heart swelling with a mixture of gratitude and disbelief. She had always struggled with her appearance, always felt like she didn't quite fit in, but here was Beast Boy, looking at her like she was the most precious thing in the world.
Slowly, Raven let herself lean into him, resting her forehead against his chest as she closed her eyes. His arms wrapped around her, pulling her into a protective, comforting embrace, and for the first time in a long while, she felt... at peace.
"I love you," she whispered, her voice muffled against his chest.
"I love you too," he replied softly, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head. "Just the way you are, Rae."
And for the first time in a while, Raven believed him.
