EONS AGO, when humankind was just beginning to form, Hecate made a mistake.

Or, at least, some gods claimed it was a mistake. She thought it was brilliant.

She was lonely. Hecate wanted something emotional to get herself attached to— and then the mortals came. Soon, humanity was evolving, building cities and discovering new things.

Hecate wanted to be part of this evolution. It couldn't just be all bad, right? All creations had a purpose.

First, it was just a trial. A single human blessed with magic. And he was great– so she gave a select group of humans magic next. Someone she could share her powers with, an attachment to the mortals.

It was a masterpiece. A beautiful puzzle of how her powers could be so good. The wizards used that blessing to help them develop even further, create architectural masterpieces, and ease their lives in society.

And although the regular mortals didn't like them, it was okay. They hid in the corners of the world and developed independently, and Hecate oversaw it all. Witches and wizards were hunted, but thanks to Hecate, they could protect themselves.

Naturally, she wasn't the only being who saw the beauty in their harmony. The first goddess who joined the cause was Demeter.

Demeter, who had already loved creating plants for the regular humans, went all out on the batch for wizarding plants. Plants with lives, plants that could scream, plants that could save, plants that could kill.

Pan came shortly after, creating the most marvelous new species. He, always enchanted with the idea of the wilderness, went all out with hundreds of species. From kappas to imps, he fell in love with all of his new creatures.

Many other gods joined. Hypnos, with his sleeping potions. Hermes, with the magic broomsticks. Nike, with quidditch. Thanatos, with the killing curse. Many others, with their own additions. In fact, it seemed for a good while that contributing to the wizarding world was a trend.

At first, it was beautiful. An unusual kind of art, but an art nonetheless. It didn't take long before the nosy gods came swooping down, Zeus with his affairs, Hera with her revenge, Athena with her heroes (or, aurors), Ares with his wars, etc.

Until the gods' new toy, the wizarding world, began to collect dust on the shelf. The worlds grew distant, and each forgot about each other, eventually. The gods and the wizards moved on individually, separated. One became history to the other.

There were a number of reasons for this separation of worlds, truly. Some gods believed the wizards should have been completely extinct– they had no godly blood and yet, had access to godly relics and a tinge of Hecate's powers. Others were too scared of the mix that was the demigod-wizards, beings too powerful and too uncontrollable.

To begin with this separation of worlds, the gods who created the wizarding world were forced into an oath where they could not have any more children with the wizards. And, just like a good part of history, the gods fell into an abyss of forgetfulness.

A case or another passed by of a demigod-wizard throughout time. But, they were so rare they were always mistaken for a very powerful wizard or a very powerful demigod. Never both— because those worlds needed to remain separated, and these demigod-wizards either didn't live long enough to discover it all, or were shut down by higher ranked beings, ones that wanted them quiet. Even the demigods forgot about the wizards, despite their long term friendship.

But, let's say some of the higher-ranked wizards never forgot their roots. Some still held that secret to heart, and one could count on their fingers the number of wizards who still knew about the gods.

Still, it was just that: A memory. A legend. Something that had died down a long time ago. And the gods knew: some worlds were just supposed to stay apart.

The greeks. The Romans. The wizards. The mortals. They just weren't made for unity. All of the conflicts along history were proof of that.

Although they would refuse to admit it, sometimes it felt like everything created by or for the gods was destined for failure. That much was clear when seeing how much the wizarding world had improved without the gods' touch.

And, the demigod-wizards never turned out quite right. There was always a flaw, a mistake, something that didn't make any of them fit with the standards of either world.

They weren't heroes. No force could control them, and they didn't obey a single soul. They were independent, and refused to follow the regime of the gods, or of the wizards.

Some liked to say they had their own laws:

1. Kill or be killed.

2. Don't trust anybody but yourself.

Just those two. Simple as that. And no order could be maintained with only those laws to hold their sanity.

They came, and they went.

Loren. Henri. Isaac. Kyara. Bernard. Destructive names, with histories of destruction and suffering trailing after. Each of them had their own tale, and one more horrendous than the other.

No wonder why the gods didn't want them around. No wonder why they had to be extinguished, like a fire out of control.

Demigod-wizards were born with a target on their backs. The favorite meal of every monster, the enemies of several gods. There was no existence with such conditions.

But, for a change to happen, all that is required is two unfortunate souls to get caught up in the middle of everything. After all, demigod-wizards do not choose to be born that way; if Daphne and Theo had the option, they would have chosen something else.

However, if those two just kept sticking to the 'what if' nothing would get done. They were just two unlucky people who had to make a change for the life they wanted. Or something close to it.

Every story has to start somewhere. But, just remember, this is not the story you expect it to be.

This is the story of two unfortunate children who didn't want to cross the border of the two worlds. This is the story of two children forced into roles and responsibilities they didn't account for.

Author's notes!

So, I think you guys deserve an explanation for why it took me so long to publish this.

Three months ago, I began having sudden and serious pain in my foot, which I didn't have an explanation for. I had to go to several different doctors and even go to other states for specific treatment, and it took a really long time so I could have this fixed. I had an emergency surgery alarm, and then I had an actual surgery. Naturally, it's been really tough. I didn't even have an actual diagnosis until my foot was cut open during surgery cause nobody seemed to be 100% about my problem.

Because of all this I've been through, Wattpad became less of a priority, and I practically forgot about my stories. I'm still in recovery, and since tests are getting tougher, I still won't be very active. But I am always around to answer a comment or see you guys post something on my message board.

Thank you for the patience, and I really hope you guys will like this book and its continuations <3
