It was the day of the wedding. We had picked out a chapel that didn't have the cheesy Vegas theme going on and the girls had split fast to get a wedding dress. Andy was going to be my best man and Patrick, Pete and Brendon the groomsmen. At the last minute, Judai piped up, "Okay, Pete's coming with me and he's not going to be in your wedding party, I need his advice and him. Sarah and Elisa are going to be bridesmaids."
I was extremely confused but agreed nonetheless. We went our separate ways and bought tuxedo's and such. I went shopping for honeymoon clothing and got ready. Bronx came up to me as we arrived and said something to shock me out my carcass. "Uncle Joe, I'm giving Aunt Judai away today. Tell me now, do I trust you enough to hand her over or do I put her in a car and drive her back to Chicago?"
I didn't know whether to laugh at how serious he looked or to be offended. "Buddy, I promise you, I will be good to Judai. She'll be loved everyday of her life and want for nothing. Hey, that sounds pretty good. Let me write that down." I took out the piece of paper I had started writing my vows on, which I would later paste in my journal to Judai, and wrote in the promise I just made.
He shook my hand and I pulled him in for a bro hug. We both pulled away, slightly uncomfortable, and I continued. "Where's Laz? He's got the rings?"
Bronx scoffed, "Don't you know he hates being called Lazslo? He's probably breaking into Aunt Sarah's eyeliner. I'll go look."
He left and a suited up, teary eyed Pete came to join me. "She looks beautiful man. You better not hurt her."
"Ah this is the second Wentz male to come threaten me in less than five minutes. Just need old Saint now."
Pete grinned, "Saint's, uhm, getting ready? He says he's doing his hair and eyeliner."
I looked at him shocked, "This could be bad."
My mother came in from the hall, looker more frail by the day. "Look at my handsome son, all grown up, successful and getting married to such a lovely woman."
I smiled and kissed her cheek, "You look great mom."
Just then a flash went off and a small, black haired boy in a tux with tails was standing behind us, taking a photo of the moment. My mom shakily asked, "Joe, is that..."
"Saint! What the hell did you do to your hair!" A furious Pete whisper yelled.
"Whatever Dad. Are we getting Joe and Judai married or what?"
I stepped in, "Young man, if I hear you talk to your father in that tone again I will leave you here in Vegas on your own. And it's Uncle Joe and Aunt Judai."
"Yeah, okay. Everyone's ready to go," he said, clearly not giving a crap.
My mom went to take her seat back up front with the rest of our family in attendance and I opened the double doors, walking determinedly down the aisle to where the rabbi stood. Patrick followed with Elisa on his arm in a deep blue gown and he headed towards my side and picked up an acoustic guitar while Elisa stood opposite me. Brendon and Sarah followed, both taking their places. Saint walked down the aisle with a pillow resting on his hands, two rings I had picked out today glistening on it.
Bronx stuck his hair out the double doors and held a thumbs up. Patrick began strumming the notes to "Nothing else matters" by Metallica. The double doors opened and there, on Pete and Bronx's arms was Judai in a champagne strapless dress with a tight bodice and billowing bottom. Her raven hair was done in an elaborate twist down her left shoulder and held a simple tiara in place. She looked so beautiful, I could feel tears filling up my eyes.
Pete and Bronx walked her down the isle and each kissed one of her cheeks. Pete took her left hand and placed it in mine. Once the traditional Jewish part of the wedding was done, it was time for our vows and exchanging rings. I cleared my throat, "Judai, you've been my life boat in an ocean of uncertainty. You've always pulled me back to the person I really am all these years. I promise that I will love you and protect you every day of my life and that you'll never want for anything. May nothing but death do us part." I winked at her with the reference.
She smiled through happy tears as I slipped the wedding band onto her tiny finger. She began to speak, "Well, you're a tough act to follow. I had so much to say but my mind went blank the moment I saw you up here. I promise to be as faithful and dedicated to you every day from now on as I have been without you even knowing it for all these years."
She slid the ring onto my finger and the rabbi declared us married. I bent her backwards in an eloquent kiss which, admittedly hurt my back but was every bit worth it.
We all spilled out the chapel amidst cheers and were met with violent flashes. Paparazzi surrounded the chapel. Pete swore under his breathe and moved Saint behind him while I blocked off Judai and my mom. We all retreated back into the chapel where the manager was waiting. "I was on my way to warn you Mr. Trohman. They pitched up during the service. I don't know who leaked it to the press."
I saw Saint grinning widely and immediately knew it was him. I picked him up and dug through his pockets. Sure as hell, blasted on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram were posts from him talking about the wedding. Soon, there was screaming of our names and I knew the Vegas fan girls had arrived.
If Pete had been mad before about the press being outside, his fury had elevated to full out anger when he heard the fans and just plain bat shit furious when I showed him Saint's phone. He had Saint by the collar of his tuxedo, "Why would you ruin the only happy day we've had in so long! Why would you do this to Judai! She's been nothing but amazing to you!"
"Dad put me down! You're choking me!"
Andy had gripped Pete and was pulling him away and Patrick had grabbed Saint by the cuff of his shirt. "You better go apologise now."
Saint pulled himself out of Patrick's grip. "Why should I huh? They're busy celebrating and my mom's body isn't even cold yet!"
Patrick surprised us all, "Because this would have made your mom so happy. Do you know why your dad was Judai's man of honour? He was taking your moms place!"
This surprised me. I couldn't process it all. I took a deep breath then came up with a plan. I turned towards the manager, "Please phone the police and tell them the situation. They'll escort us out of here to the airport. Judai, I got Pete to put your bags in the car."
In an hour we were at the airport and ready to leave. As I was leaving, I handed Pete an envelope. "They're for next week Saturday. Got it all sorted out already. Just do it."
Inside the envelope were three tickets and confirmation of the reservations at our hotel I'd made for Pete and the boys to join us. He shook his head, "Man, it's your honeymoon."
I winked at him, "I know. That's why they're only for next week."
Pete laughed at my innuendo and gave me a tight bro hug. "I don't know what I'd do without you and Judai. Go be married man. It's an amazing feeling."
With that, I took Judai's hand and we stepped onto the airplane, off on our honeymoon.
