Roslyn wiped the corners of her mouth, grimacing when her fingers came away black. She dropped the demon to the ground, stepping over it without a second thought. It had been the third she'd drained that night, but only the third in an infestation of demons that had settled in the warehouse. The rest had descended back to hell once she got her hands on number two, leaving their vessels behind for her to deal with.
She didn't bother.
The sun was beginning to rise behind the clouds covering the entire sky and Roslyn donned her sunglasses, classic aviators she'd stolen from Koda. Koda Townes, her boyfriend whom she was supposed to meet for breakfast before school. Ordinarily, that wouldn't be an issue except that she was technically three hours from Forks.
Seattle hadn't been Roslyn's first choice for a hunt, but she'd heard about the demons and knew that she needed to get out there one way or another to get rid of them. She might as well get a meal out of it while she was there. It had taken her ages to catch their scent and Roslyn didn't want to think about why. It would only mean another mystery to solve before she could leave.
Instead, Roslyn tied her short, red hair back and stepped into her car. The old mustang hummed to life, her Guns N Roses cassette blaring through the speakers as soon as it connected. She was out of Seattle and on the freeway before the sun had fully risen, the roads empty so early on a Friday morning. Her speedometer climbed, topping out at 115 as she sped home.
The sleepy town of Forks, Washington greeted her as she slid around a turn in the road. A heartbeat ahead had her slowing and she waved lazily to Chief Charlie Swan as she passed him on patrol before taking off again. It wasn't long after that she arrived home, pulling around to the back of the only apartment building Forks had to offer. It wasn't much, but the landlord hadn't asked questions when Roslyn had forged her "parents" signature on the lease, claiming she was being exiled there instead of going to military school. He didn't bother her, and she was a quiet enough tenant that he barely knew she was there half the time. If it wasn't for the cherry red mustang and the rock music that occasionally filtered through the walls, it would have been like she didn't exist.
Roslyn sped inside, not bothering with the door. She always left her bedroom window unlocked. It made it easier to come and go without anyone questioning her odd hours or the occasional times she'd come home covered in blood. Fortunately, that morning was not one of those times; the only blood she'd spilled had gone straight down her throat.
She was halfway through changing, ripped jeans buttoned and a new sports bra thrown on, when her phone rang from the living room. Roslyn had to remind herself not to answer on the first ring and took her time checking the caller ID.
Koda.
"Hey, love," Roslyn said, putting her phone on speaker as she picked out a cropped band tee for the day.
"Just wanted to make sure you're awake," Koda replied, his voice muffled. Roslyn could hear water running from his end and knew he'd been surfing. It was the only reason he'd be up and showering so early.
"Isn't it a little cold to be on the water, Koda?" She asked sternly, rolling her eyes at him.
Koda's laughter rang through the speaker, making Roslyn smile at the boisterous sound. Her boyfriend had never liked living in Forks. He claimed he was made for summer, sunshine, and surfing and that was it, none of which can be found in abundance in the rain of Forks.
"It was chilly, but the Jeep's heater is finally fixed so I'm fine now," he reasoned, still laughing. "Besides, Mom convinced my dad that it's okay to use hot water in February, so I can shower in the saunas of hell if I wanted."
