There was a legend about an Elleth. On her 1800 birthday, an evil fairy came and attacked her homeland. The princess bravely fought the fairy, but eventually lost, due to a curse hurled at her. The princess was thrown into a deep sleep, and could only be awoken by the kiss of her soulmate.
It was now a thousand years later, and Legolas didn't really care about the legend. Sure, he accepted it as fact, considering her kingdom was near Mirkwood, but he had better things to do than kiss a girl who wasn't even awake.
But as he was on a hunting trip, happenstance led him near her decaying castle. It was completely deserted. Legolas remembered that everyone within the grounds had left after the tragedy.
Curiosity drove Legolas to the very gates of the castle. He heaved the door open with a grunt, not even sure why or what he was doing. He was immediately greeted by several small pixies. According to the legend, Y/N, the princess, had been a great friend of the pixies. They flitted around him, chittering in an unfamiliar language.
Still driven by curiosity, Legolas wandered the halls until he was confronted by a pixie who seemed to be in charge. She hovered in front of him, blocking his path.
"Have you come to see if you are the princess's soulmate?" The pixie asked in a surprisingly deep voice, considering she wasn't even as tall as his mid-calf.
"I... guess?" Legolas replied.
She smiled. "Come with me." She fluttered away, leading Legolas to the princess's room. As Legolas entered, he saw that it was the only place in the castle that wasn't in a state of decay. Pixie magic?
Then he saw her. She lay, peacefully, as if she would wake at any moment. Her H/C hair splayed out on the pillow around her, framing her beautiful face. Legolas wondered what color her eyes would be, what they would look like, gazing at him full of love...
Snap out of it, Legolas! He thought. She's not even awake yet! He walked over to her bedside. Oh, gosh. He realized. How weird is it to kiss someone you don't know while she's asleep? His face twisted. He would not stoop that low.
As if guessing his thoughts, the pixie spoke, "You don't have to kiss her on the lips. You can kiss her anywhere, and if she is your soulmate, she will wake. Though, some people have taken this the wrong way and kissed on the neck... or worse."
Legolas felt rage boil up inside him. Who had dared touch this sleeping beauty?
Slowly, he took her hand, and placed a quick kiss to her knuckles. The pixie smiled, as if this was the right choice.
They waited tensely for a few seconds, before Y/N's eyes fluttered open. They immediately landed on Legolas, and she stared at him for a few seconds with her mouth slightly open. Legolas thought it was the cutest thing, and smiled at her.
"Welp, I knew it, I'm dead," Y/N said, not taking her gaze off him
"Why do you say that?" Legolas asked, tilting his head.
"Because you're clearly an angel."
Legolas fought so hard to keep a smirk off his face. "But I am no angel. And you are very much alive."
"I am? Oh, gosh, what year is it?" Legolas told her the date and she shot up. "Are you telling me I've been asleep for a thousand years!"
"About that."
She flopped back onto the bed with a groan. "Then why do I feel like I've been awake for a thousand years?"
"That's only because you just woke up, dearie," the pixie said. "It'll wear off in a few minutes. Do you remember what happened?"
"I think there was a spinning wheel..."
The pixie cocked her head. "No, no, there was no spinning wheel. You fought the evil fairy, remember."
"But I remember pricking my finger on the spindle."
"You did prick you finger, but it was completely unrelated to the events that sent you to sleep."
Y/N just stared at the pixie blankly. "Just let me go back to sleep."
"Dearie, you've been asleep. For a thousand years. This Ellon here saved you. He's your soulmate."
Y/N turned back to Legolas, looking him up and down. "Guess I could get used to that," she concluded. She thought it was low enough that he didn't hear, but he did. Once again, he had to fight to keep a smirk down.
The pixie flittered over to him. "I'm sorry about her, but the curse is slow to wear off. She'll be disoriented and tired for the next few hours at most."
"Deyia?" The princess called, and the pixie turned to her. "Where's my father? Where are the townspeople? Why can't I hear them?"
The pixie's face fell. "I'm sorry, my lady, but they've all left."
A strange expression passed over Y/N's face. "What? No! My father wouldn't..."
"Your father has left for the Undying Lands. With him gone and you asleep, there was nothing to keep the people here. So they left."
Tears pricked at Y/N's eyes. To her, the kingdom had been happy and prosperous just a few seconds ago, but in reality, a thousand years had passed, and everything had changed.
Legolas, noticing her distress, sat beside her on the bed. He hesitantly reached out and placed his hand over hers, and when she didn't pull back, he squeezed slightly. "You do not have to return with me if you do not wish, but know, you will always have a home in Mirkwood."
She met his eyes, her own E/C ones sparkling with unshed tears. "Thank you." She whispered.
She did return with him, and all her pixie friends with her. A few months later, she was settled in, but still slightly disoriented from having been asleep for a thousand years. The two of them had never again broached the topic of soulmates, though it was ever present in their minds. They found that they could get very used to the idea, though they kept these thoughts to themselves until a more appropriate time.
One day, about a year after Y/N had come to Mirkwood, Deyia came flittering to Legolas, who was returning from the archery course.
"My lord!" She cried. "I fear Y/N is about to do something stupid! Oh, she always had a tendency to do stupid stuff! Oh, dear, oh, no..."
"Deyia," Legolas interrupted her. "What is she doing?"
"She forced us to give her a list of everyone who's ever kissed her over the years, and then she grabbed her sword, and I think she's going to go after them!"
A smile flashed across Legolas' face. Of course she was going after them. It was only one of the many reasons this girl was his soulmate. Still, he rushed to her chambers.
"Where do you think you're going?" He asked, stepping into her room. She looked up at him, like a cat having been caught doing something wrong. "Without me?" He finished, and relief, paired with a smirk, flashed across her face.
She grabbed a piece of paper from her desk, and handed it to Legolas. "This is the list of everyone who kissed me while I was asleep. Most of them are Men or Dwarf, and are now deceased, but a couple of them should still be alive." She strapped a knife to her belt, then drew it and pointed it at him. "Speaking of which, where did you kiss me?"
"Your hand."
"Good." She sheathed her knife again. "Wise choice. You may continue living." She grabbed her pack, then stalked out of the room. "You coming, Pretty Boy?"
"Always."
