Later That Day City of Vasel
Later that day, Ellet was in a secluded area in the Gallian-held of Vasel where she could look over her notes. She had planned a series of interviews for the leading members of Squad 7, and to prepare herself for the meeting, she had compiled notes on not only Lieutenant Welkin but also the NCOs under his command. Ellet was excited about what she would uncover during the interviews. Sitting down on a patch of grass she had found, she twirled her pen in her hand, her mind buzzing with anticipation.
"Squad 7 of the Third Battalion. My first impression: good," claimed Ellet.
Taking her notepad out, she perused through the pages, reviewing her notes. In addition, she had taken a picture of each member and clipped them to a page in the notebook. Her thorough preparation was evident in the detailed notes she had compiled, each page a testament to her dedication to the task.
"Let's see, first off, the commander of Squad 7, Lieutenant Welkin Gunther. Next in command is Sergeant Alicia Melchiott," summarized Ellet at first.
Ellet then laid on back as she thought more about what she knew. Welkin seemed a bit softer than she would have expected of someone who was the son of the late General Belgen Gunther. She also remembered that Alicia's hometown of Bruhl was the same as Welkin's. It made Ellet wonder about a possible connection between the two. Were they childhood friends? Or maybe childhood sweethearts. To Ellet, that would be a juicy detail to add to her article.
Next on her list was Sergeant Largo Potter, the most experienced NCO of the unit, and Corporal Bridgette Stark, the head Shocktrooper. Then, Ellet remembered Stark's nickname, quickly grabbing her pen and writing down the redhead's nickname, 'Rosie,' into her notepad. She noted that those two didn't seem to trust Lieutenant Gunther yet for reasons she didn't know. This potential conflict within the squad piqued Ellet's curiosity, and she was eager to delve deeper into it, especially if she could get them to open up about why they distrusted him.
After that, she moved to Isara Gunther, the chief mechanic and driver for the Edelweiss. Ellet soon developed a puzzled look. She heard Isara was supposed to be the lieutenant's sister, yet she was a Darcsen. This contradiction piqued her curiosity, and she wondered what that was all about and whether or not she would eventually find out.
Continuing through the list of personnel, she looked to the group's foreign detachment: Corporals Jack Lawrence, Iohan Comescu, Raphael Vargas, and Iohan's armored giant, whom the unit calls Dredger. At this moment, she marveled at how many foreign volunteers were in the seventh platoon. For a moment, Ellet wondered what had caused them to come here and join Gallia's fight. Especially considering how Romania was fighting alongside Germany, Spain was more preoccupied with its troubles at home, and America's forces had yet to arrive in France or Britain.
Then there was the crew of the Shamrock, the second tank within Squad 7. The tank commander, Sergeant Arianna, the loader and gunner, Pierre Dubois, and Nikolai Ivushkin. Lastly, the driver and hull machine-gunner, Leon Schmidt and Kreis Czherny. And finally, to round up Squad 7 was Father Hendricks, the chaplain who would attend to their spiritual needs.
As Ellet looked over the list of Squad 7 members before her, she couldn't help but chuckle, "Well, you couldn't ask for a more colorful crew than that. Something tells me that these guys are different than the usual troops, somehow. It may be my keen journalistic instincts."
Getting up on her feet, and with a renewed sense of vigor and confidence, she added, "Well then, the truth's not going to uncover itself. Here I come, ready or not."
