"We will make you a fitted dress that will both highlight your curves and hide your knife and gun," Francesco says to me. His mood appears to have gotten better. "You'll learn to shoot a gun with me next week, and Gustav will continue training you how to use a knife and hand-to-hand combat. Can you dance?"
"No," I say.
"Don't worry. I'll call an old friend of mine who knows how to dance well. He'll teach you in no time."
"Sounds good. When do we go up north?" I ask.
"In a few weeks. Gustav should be done training you then."
"Okay."
"The party will take place a week after we arrive, so we will be on a tight schedule. On the day of the party, everyone will wake up early and will meet for an early breakfast. Then everyone will go off to prepare and help set up. All you have to worry about is getting dressed and ready. Got it?"
"Yes."
"Good. You'll get measured for your dress tomorrow, okay?"
"Okay."
---
I sit in my office, my eyes glued to the door. If anyone were to walk in while I make a call to Davis, I would be screwed.
When I decided no one was coming I slowly picked up the receiver and dialed Davis's direct line that goes straight to his office phone.
The line rings for two seconds before someone picks up.
"Hello, this is Davis," I hear Davis say on the other line.
"Davis," I say, "I have some important news."
"Delia? Hold on, give me a moment," I hear some rustling before Davis begins to speak again. "Okay, the door is locked. Tell me."
"Francesco wants me to kill a man named Mr. Monto. I don't know his first name, but what I do know is he's stealing shipments from Francesco and his connection within the police and government."
"Okay," Davis says. "Go on.""Also, a few weeks ago before I learned that I would have to kill Monto there was a shooting in the middle of the night and one of the bullets hit me."
"Oh my god, Delia. Are you okay?" Davis says worriedly.
"I'm fine. I blacked out after I was shot and woke up in Francesco's office in a hospital bed. Later that day he told me about the mob and said I was his new assassin. He told me that I would have to kill Monto at a party and has me training for it."
"What's the party for?" Davis asks.
"He said there isn't one and that he's just going to make up an excuse to have it. All I know is that I have to kill the Monto man at the party."
"Geeze, Delia. You have been getting into some deep shit."
"I know. I was wondering if you could do some research on this Monto man."
"Okay, and it's spelled M-O-N-T-O?"
"Yep."
I hear Davis sufferling around. "Delia," Davis says.
"Yeah?"
"Do you know who that is?" He asks in disbelief.
"No, why?"
"At first I had thought you couldn't be talking about him, but now..."
"Who is he, Davis?"
"Delia," there's a pause. "Francesco wants you to kill Mongomry Monto. He owns one of the biggest oil companies in the country. He has stocks everywhere, even within the bank. If he were to die his company would go to one of his competitors."
"But he stole a shipment of Francesco's. Why would an owner of a very successful oil company steal from the mob? And what would he steal?"
"I don't know what Monto would steal from Francesco."
"Oh god, Davis. Do you think they stole people? Like people who have been trafficked."
"Maybe, but it's unlikely. Monto probably heard about a shipment Francesco was getting and was interested in it. He probably got to the dock before Francesco could so he could take the shipment for himself. Either way, Francesco wants him dead, and he might take Monto's company when he's killed. That would give Francesco more power and money than any mobster in the world. That would make him unkillable. Even if you got around to killing him, you wouldn't be able to get close."
Davis shifts in his seat. "Listen to me closely, Delia. You need to get the hell out of there before he makes you do something you will regret. Once they've gotten you to commit a crime you're in. There is no escape."
"Davis-"
"No, listen to me, Delia," his tone is serious. The kind of seriousness he only uses when he needs to get a point across. "Forget about what they did to Ralf. You need to get the hell out of there, and we'll go to some foreign country like Jamaica, or somewhere where they can't find us. We can live out our days in peace, Delia. We can forget about this whole thing."
"I can't, Davis. I need justice for Ralf. I need to kill Francesco. Even if it'll kill me."
Davis sighs. "I just wish sometimes you would think about how much you have instead of how much you lost. Delia, I-"
I slam down the receiver just as the door to my office opens.
"Delia?" Francesco says as he enters.
"Yes?" I place my elbows on my desk and prop up my head.
"Am I interrupting something?" He asks.
"No," I manage to get out.
He says nothing.
My heart beats faster and faster as the silence between us grows louder. "Good, I need to talk to you," he finally says
"About what?" I ask.
He walks to my desk and sits on the corner.
"We need to talk about your mission," he takes a deep breath. "I know it must be hard to know that you're going to take a man's life. I've been there. But after the first time, it gets easier, and it's not like you are killing him for no reason."
I breathe a sigh of relief. "Why am I killing him, Francesco?"
He looks down at the floor. "Monto is a very wealthy man, and although he makes a lot of money, he steals. He steals from me, the Rosso's, and other families. They all want him dead.
"It won't be easy to kill him. Monto is a smart man, but he has his flaws. One of them being women. All I need you to do is lure him to a remote location and kill him. No one will know. Not even his bodyguards. Everyone will be too busy partying to realize what's going on."
"How will I lure him to a remote location?"
Francesco smirks. "It's quite funny actually. Monto, unlike most men, prefers redheads over blonds or brunettes. He has a weakness for them. All you have to do is catch his attention and then lead him on. Trust me, once he sees you, he will follow you. Got it?"
"Got it."
"Good," he gets down from my desk. "Dinner is going to be served a bit later tonight. We have guests coming. Dress nicely."
Francesco then leaves my office, leaving me in complete silence.
