THE SKY WAS painted a deep black, the main source of light was the bombs that had began to drop. fire exploding from the bombs, burning anything it could touch. colette's eyes scanned the horizon, watching as across the ocean, she could see as houses went up in flames.

screams of terror from both the shear shock of the bombs, and the feeling of the dead ripping people apart could faintly be heard from where colette stood. her bottom lip pulled between her teeth. her head felt like it was being submerged under water, everything felt like time had slowed, she was watching the world burn in slow motion.

bombs hit the ground, exploding and catching fire to anything around where it landed. her eyes were like mirrors, the red flames shining into her eyes, her frame too held the orange glow that the world held. as far as her eyes could see, it was red. fire grew and spread like a mad man, tearing anything down that dared to stand in its way.

her knees felt weak, willing herself not to collapse, disbelief and despair coursing through her veins. helicopters flew above, while the military promised to protect the lives of innocents, protect those who hadn't turned yet, here they were dropping bombs left and right. wiping out anyone who still stood, still functioned and could control themselves.

a hand firmly grasped her arm, colette spun, coming face to face with madison. her mother held a worried expression, and suddenly colette felt like she'd been yanked from beneath the water. her ears rung and she listened as the growls from the dead echoed, nearing them. like predators slowly trapping their prey.

"cole, focus. come on." madison told, pulling the teen towards where travis stood, rushing to get their belongings closer to the shore. madison dug into her pocket, grabbing colette's hand, forcing a small pocket blade into her hand. "look at me." madison told, grabbing the sides of the teens face. "keep him safe." madison told, releasing the teen. picking up a rock she hit one of the dead over the head, crouching down to make sure it stayed down.

colette's eyes were wide as she looked around, standing inches away from chris who wept and grieved his dead mother. his hands clutching the white sheet that was laid over her body, tied at her ankles and above her head. colette felt sick for the boy, her eyes scanned the beach. watching as the dead limped and growled, hands reaching out when they got close enough. willing to close their dead decaying fingers around their flesh.

her grip with tight on the blade, knuckles going white around the material, the black handle left small marks on her palm, the silver shiny blade shining against the red flames that painted her skin. her eyes landed on a women, no older then colette's mother, her legs moving so slowly, on dragging limply against the sand. the bone in her ankle sticking out of the skin, the sight made colette's skin flush with goosebumps.

her mouth felt dry, and her palms clammy, her heart felt like it slowed and her breathing felt like it had rapidly increased. listening to the dead groans that left her mouth, her milky white eyes burning into colette's, her skin an off white pale color, her veins dark against her skin, clashing so harshly colette could make out most of the veins crawling up the women's arms, her legs, even her neck.

sucking in a breath of air, colette's hand retightened around the blades handle, trying to ignore the fear that burned deep into her soul, watching as the women only stared back at her, taking a shaky step forward, colette pressed her hand against the middle of the women's chest, the dead hands attempting to grasp at the girl, nails feverishly scratching at the girls hoodie sleeves. raising her opposite hand, she slowly brought the blade down into the women's skull.

bile rose in her mouth at the sound of the blade moving through the women's head, splitting down into the women's brain. her body went limp against colette's, falling onto the sand with a soft thud, blood gushing from her head staining the brown sand now a dark dirty red color.

colette knelt down beside the women, gently pulling the blade from her head, looking up hearing the sound of the speed boat. a breath escaped her lips as she stood, moving to chris, "come on, we've gotta go chris." she tried to tell, hand grasping his arm as the dead moved closer. their growls putting worry deep into the girls stomach. "i'm not leaving her." he snapped at the girl, glaring at her before turning back to his mother.

colette nodded, letting out a harsh sigh as travis began to run over. "you think she'd want this? you risking you're life when she just lost hers? no she wouldn't. get the hell up." colette snapped as travis reached them, he sent the girl a warning stare. "watch it." he told the girl who rolled her eyes, not having enough want nor the energy to argue with the man whom would only agree if it benefited his son.

"cole! on the boat now!" madison yelled as she helped travis, colette slowly took off into a sprint, her legs moving at a rapid pace, she now silently thanked her father for forcing her into cross country and track.

treading through the harsh waves, her hand grasped onto nicks, the boy quickly pulled her up, her body slumping in the boat as she watched the other three hurry to the boat. with a dead eliza held tightly in travis's arms.

they hurried into the boat, chris clutched his mother to his chest, arms wrapped tightly around her. one of the dead had made it to the boat, holding tightly onto it, not allowing the engine to fully submerge into the water. acting quick, nick rose the engine flicking the motor on as it repeatedly swirled against the man's face, blood and brain matter flying into the water.

colette squeezed her eyes shut, looking away as madison pulled her against her chest. watching in horror, moments later the boat began to move once more.

colette watched as bombs were being dropped, flames went up, and screams echoed, and now she knew, nothing was gonna go back to how it was.
