IT WAS AN ODD feeling, the type that made her feel crazy. one that made her wonder if she was crazy, if she'd lost her mind and went crazy, because it didn't truly make any sense to her.

the pocket blade was held tightly in her hand, fingers holding the blade tightly in her grasp, the blade hidden in the handle, waiting for when colette would feel unsafe, for when she'd come face to face with another one of the dead. she felt safe, protected because of the weapon she held; that was why she felt crazy, because feeling safe because of a weapon didn't make any sense.

it shouldn't of made sense. colette believed she shouldn't of had to feel safe with the blade locked tightly in her hand, yet a piece of her understood why she needed it to feel okay, to feel comforted against the dead that roamed the earth.

taking chunks out of anything that had a pulse, anything that had warm blood, could control themselves. she hadn't slept, no one had.

it'd been two days since she'd slept, and she could slowly begin to feel the delirium set in. dark bags sat beneath her eyes, and each time she attempted to shut them, she was met with the image of the women, her jaws snapping feverishly at her, the blood that dried around her mouth, the sound of the blade lodging itself within her skull.

in a way it felt surreal, like a fever dream that colette was sure she'd wake up from. wake and feel the sudden rush of fear, before realizing it had all been a dream, though she knew it wouldn't. she knew this was her life now, every single piece of her being knew she'd never be able to escape the nightmare she'd fallen into.

her legs were curled beneath her, her side leaning into the sofa that sat on the deck of the boat. pocket blade clutched tightly in her hand, listening to the sound of the waves crashing against the sides of the boat. eyes sunken as she stared at everything and nothing at all.

screams filled her ears, eyes darting to where alicia stood looking off the side of the boat. standing, her legs wobbled a bit trying to wake themselves up after she'd been sitting for hours.

forcing her legs to move, she stopped beside alicia. eyes slightly going wide as she watched a raft full of people floating mear feet away. her hand stuffed the pocket blade into her pocket, hands grasping the metal pole that wrapped around the deck, her warm hands clashing against the cool metal material. "we're gotta help them." alicia spoke up, earning a hum of agreement from colette. "we can't leave them out there. it's inhumane." colette told, listening to their yells and pleads for help. looking to her mother who nodded pushing away from the side of the boat. "i'm gonna talk to strand." she told, jogging off to find strand.

the raft was filled with nearly a dozen people, each having dark red burns from the sun on their shoulders. "what do we do?" colette questioned, looking to her siblings, both sent her a small glance before turning back to the raft in the water. eyes squinting as the raft slowly progressed past them. "where's madison?" travis questioned, looking between the three clark siblings. "she's talking to strand" colette told, glancing to travis who nodded.
