Aarushi's gaze met Dhir Oberoi's, who was casually leaning on the couch, smirking in amusement. She felt her blood boil instantly.
"What the hell, Mr. Oberoi!" she shouted without thinking. Suddenly, all eyes turned towards her. Realizing her outburst, she quickly added, "Ahh, sorry."
Her mother, noticing the tension, asked, "Beta, do you know him?"
Aarushi stood there silently, staring daggers at Dhir. Before she could respond, he smirked and answered for her, "Yeah, due to business. Of course, she's very successful, everybody knows her. So yes, I do know her. But face to face? This is the first time we're meeting." He stood up casually, his charm masking the rivalry between them.
Aarushi, her temper barely contained, tilted her head toward him and sarcastically whispered, "Ahh, really?" Her eyes shot daggers while she gritted her teeth.
He just nodded smugly, and she, still frustrated, forced herself to say aloud, "Yaa... yaaaa, we're meeting fiiiiirrrsssttt tttimmmeeee. First time..." Her tone was drenched with frustration, while Dhir seemed to be enjoying every bit of her discomfort.
Their parents, oblivious to the underlying tension, continued discussing the potential marriage. Aarushi sat stiffly, fuming silently as her sisters nudged her, encouraging her to talk privately with him. Before she could protest, they practically pushed her towards the rooftop.
Once they were alone on the roof, Aarushi couldn't hold back anymore.
"Woowww!" she shouted, her frustration pouring out. "What the hell is going on? Why are you here? And don't even think about it, Mr. Oberoi—Me aapse shadi nhi karne wali!"
(I am not going to marry you).
Dhir, unfazed, replied sarcastically,"Haa me to mara jaaa rhaaa hu na tumse shadi karne ke liye." His voice dripped with mockery.
(Oh yes, because I'm just dying to marry you)
"Listen, I don't want to marry you either," Aarushi snapped back. "I have only one goal in life, and that's to become the most successful person in the world. And just so you know, I don't believe in love, and the only reason I'm here is because my parents think it's 'good for business.'"
He interrupted with a teasing smirk, "Oh, is that so? Well, same here. I don't care for useless things like love either. And for the record, I'm more focused on crushing your ego by making sure your company becomes mine. There's no way I'll let you escape this one."
Aarushi rolled her eyes in disbelief. They both stood facing opposite directions, arms crossed, glaring at the horizon. She muttered under her breath, "If it wasn't for my family, I wouldn't be tolerating this for a second..."
Dhir, equally irritated, thought to himself, "This woman is too much to handle."
They both descended the stairs, fully prepared to leave the awkward situation behind. But as they reached the living room, their hearts stopped.
The room was filled with laughter, excitement, and the sweet aroma of celebratory sweets. Aarushi and Dhir, however, stood frozen, unable to process the sudden turn of events. Their parents were exchanging shagun—gifts symbolizing the engagement—and joyfully sharing sweets with one another. Everyone looked overjoyed, completely oblivious to the inner turmoil the bride and groom-to-be were experiencing.
Drishti and Dilisha, Aarushi's younger sisters, noticed the excitement and quickly approached Aarushi with wide smiles.
"Di, wow! You're getting married! We're going to have the most handsome jiju ever!" Drishti exclaimed, her eyes sparkling.
