It was late evening, and Dongmin sat at his desk, scribbling aimlessly in his notebook, hoping to distract himself from the day’s frustrations. His headphones blared music, a mix of alternative rock, which was his go-to for comfort when life felt like too much. The only light in the room came from his computer screen, casting a faint glow over the dark space. His mind had been swirling with nonsense—drama at school, friends who were driving him crazy, and a general sense of dissatisfaction. He needed peace, and this was the closest he could get to it.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed, pulling him from his thoughts. He glanced at the screen, seeing a message from an unknown number.
Unknown: Jihoon, how could you leave me like that! I thought we were best friends!
Dongmin frowned, confused. Who was this, and why were they texting him about someone named Jihoon?
Unknown: Bro! I literally embarrassed myself while trying to impress the girl at the skatepark 🤡. She looked disgusted 💀. And where were you? Oh yeah, you ditched me right in the middle of it! Thanks for leaving me to crash and burn by myself. I swear, it’s like you planned this 😤. I KNOW IT. You and your evil plans!
Dongmin raised an eyebrow. He didn’t know what was more absurd—the fact that this stranger thought he was Jihoon or the wild accusations about some skatepark disaster. He typed back, bemused.
Dongmin: ???
Unknown: Don’t play dumb, you always do this! Last time it was the water balloon incident, and now THIS? I’m onto you, Han Jihoon!
Dongmin’s eyes widened slightly. Han Jihoon? That was his brother's name. But seriously? It couldn’t be meant for his brother, could it? He doubted Jihoon had time for this kind of drama. He replied again.
Dongmin: I have no idea what you're talking about.
Unknown: Haha, right, right. Sure you don't, bro. I’m just waiting for the part where you admit it was all a setup. I'm telling you, one day I’ll catch you red-handed! 💥
Dongmin: Dude, I think you have the wrong number.
Unknown: Nice try, but you won’t fool me this time. I know it's you!
Dongmin: ...It's not.
Unknown: What if the whole class hears what unhinged trash can incident happened to me?! My prestige is already going sideways from Eunchae constantly teasing me. I'm sure yall are plotting against me.
Dongmin: Listen, I don’t know who you are, and I don’t care. Wrong. Number.
Unknown: Wait, hold up. For real?? I’m not texting Han Jihoon?
Dongmin: No, you're not. Congrats on embarrassing yourself in front of a complete stranger. 👏
There was a long pause before the next message.
Unknown: OMG I am so sorry!! Totally my bad. This is...awkward. I’ll stop bothering you now!
Dongmin: Good.
Dongmin rolled his eyes and settled back into his chair, thinking that was the end of it. But a few moments later...
Unknown: ...
Unknown: …But actually, since we’re already talking, wanna be friends?
Dongmin: No.
Unknown: Oh come on, don’t be like that! You seem cool. I’m usually great at making friends! People say I’m fun to be around
Dongmin: People lie.
Unknown: Ouch! That was harsh, but I can handle it.
Dongmin: I’m sure.
Dongmin shut off his phone, hoping that would be the end of this strange conversation. An hour passed, and he managed to get back to his music and notes. Still, he couldn’t shake the memory of the ridiculous text exchange. It played on his mind, making him curious despite himself. Finally, after far too long of debating with himself, he caved and picked up his phone again.
Dongmin: What even was that unhinged trash can story?
Unknown: Oh, NOW you’re curious?? Haha, I’ll tell you...but only if you say we can be friends :D
Dongmin: Bye.
Dongmin scoffed to himself. He didn’t know what kind of weirdo he’d just encountered, but at least the night wasn’t boring anymore.
