Eventually, Umukai broke through into the village and led Ashley straight to their quarter.
When Umukai entered the quarter, the young girl who had once met Ashley tugged at her mother's hand.
"White men attack Umukai," the woman cried out in her native tongue.
With a commanding tone, the chief snapped his eyes and put an immediate stop to the festivities. He then grabbed his tribal scepter and hurried to Umukai's quarter.
"Get the healers now!"
A few women hurried over as he gave an order in his native tongue. Since there was a big crowd at the quarter's entrance, other headhunter cleared the way.
"Leave them in charge, brother."
Luna spoke in broken English, and Umukai gripped Ashley's hands tightly.
Luna pulled at him and cast a sidelong glance at the chief, who approached Umukai and put his hands on him.
"If you do not give them a chance, she will die."
In a tone that only Umukai could hear, the chief declared in his native tongue. Umukai sighed deeply and slowly pulled away from Ashley.
The chief trailed behind and a path was paved among the villagers gathered around. Standing outside the village quarter, Rhys made the decision to go into the square.
He saw Umukai beneath a branch-built shed with the tribal chief patting Umukai's shoulders and deep in conversation.
Rhys could not swallow as he felt a rope being tightly wound around his neck.
After giving the order for everyone to move, Luna approached Rhys, who then turned to face Umukai.
"How is she doing?"
"The bullet was removed, but she lost a lot of blood." Right now, she needs to relax."
Luna responded and turned to face Umukai.
"Allow me to see her."
Rhys pleaded
"You may ask Umukai."
With that, she turned to leave.
Rhys let out a sigh, knowing he would be held accountable. With a swift motion, he folded his handcuff and entered the quarter.
Her shoulder was neatly bandaged with leaves, and the healers removed the water, which was red as if you had killed an entire village.
Ashley moaned as she slowly opened her eyes as the healers departed.
"Hey, you are awake."
Rhys muttered. Ashley tried to look around for Umukai, her vision much clearer.
"Rhys"
As she tried to get herself up, she said softly.
"You need to rest; do not move."
"I had no idea Ashley they would've betrayed me"
"We're OK and that's what matters"
After Ashley interrupted him, Rhys took her hands in his and gave her a knuckle kiss. Umukai, who was standing at the door, bit his tongue to keep his resentment of Rhys in check.
"Yokami, Brother was busy attempting to get you some fresh fruit, but you are awake."
stated Luna. The siblings approached with Rhys stepping aside.
"Rhys help me entertain the guest, let's go"
Luna persisted, and Rhys glanced at Ashley, who gave him a slight smile.
