It had been a long day, but Jungkook didn’t mind. The sweat pouring down his forehead, the aching muscles, and the thumping in his chest from hours of practice felt familiar, almost comforting. The practice room was empty now. The other members had left a while ago, heading back to the dorm for dinner. But Jungkook, as always, wanted to push himself a little harder. He felt like he needed it.

“Just one more time,” he mumbled to himself, gripping his knees as he bent down to catch his breath.

The mirrors reflected his tired but determined figure, the music still faintly playing in the background. The room felt much bigger without the rest of the members. Jin’s voice echoed in his mind as he reminded himself that he had made a promise.

“Be home before dinner, Jungkookie!” Jin had called out, wagging a finger in mock scolding.

He couldn’t afford to be late. Not again. Jin’s scolding could be relentless, but it was always wrapped in concern and care. He checked his phone. The clock blinked back at him — *5:45 PM*.

"Ah, I should go," Jungkook sighed, wiping the sweat from his forehead with the sleeve of his shirt. He grabbed his bag and slung it over his shoulder, pausing one last time in front of the mirror to catch his breath. The winter cold was waiting for him outside, and he knew he would have to face it soon.

The streets outside were much darker than when he had first arrived. Winter nights had a way of creeping up fast, swallowing daylight before you realized it. He tugged his hood up, tucking his hair beneath it as he began his walk home. The dorm was about fifteen minutes away, and even though it was already dark, Jungkook liked walking alone at night. It gave him time to think, to breathe.

His breath puffed out in small clouds as he walked, the cold biting at his skin. The streets were quieter than usual. Maybe it was the cold keeping people indoors, or maybe it was just one of those eerily still nights. But Jungkook paid it no mind. He liked this quiet. It helped clear his thoughts.

As he walked, though, a strange feeling started creeping in. It wasn’t immediate, just a small flicker at the edge of his awareness. Like someone was watching him. He glanced over his shoulder, but the street was empty. His footsteps echoed softly in the stillness, the only sound in the otherwise quiet night.

"Stop being paranoid," he muttered to himself, shaking his head. "It’s just in your head."

Still, the feeling didn’t entirely go away. His steps quickened without him realizing it, his eyes scanning the dark street ahead. He had walked this route a hundred times before, but tonight, something felt off. He glanced at his phone again, frowning when he saw the time.

*5:58 PM.*

“I should take the alley,” Jungkook said to himself. It was a shortcut, and it would get him home faster. He didn’t want to hear Jin’s lecture for being late. Again.

Without thinking much more, he turned into the small, narrow alley. It was a path he had taken before, one that cut the trip down by at least five minutes. He could already picture the warm light of the dorm waiting for him at the end of the alley, the sound of the members’ laughter inside. He would make it just in time.

Suddenly, a sharp, deafening sound echoed through the alley.

BANG.

A sharp, searing pain exploded in his lower back, and before he even had time to process what had happened, Jungkook was on the ground. His body had instinctively crumpled, his knees scraping against the cold pavement. His mind was in chaos. Pain coursed through him, unlike anything he had ever felt before.
