Some people celebrate their birthdays with their family. Others with their best friends. Birthdays were the one day of the year that everything was about one person.
That was hardly the case for Lily Evergreen.
Lily's parents were swamped with work, again, and her older brother Chris was studying abroad, leaving her alone in the house. She didn't have a lot of friends, either, and the few classmates she did consider friends were all busy. So she was spending her 18th birthday alone.
It was okay, though. Sad as it was, Lily was used to spending birthdays alone.
Her family wasn't horrible or anything. They just worked so much that they barely spent any time with their children. Although, they did devote more of their attention to Chris because of all his academic achievements. And Lily was proud of her brother as well, but it hurt that she couldn't get as much of her parents' time like he did. Over time, she learned to live with it as best she could.
"Sigh. What to do today?" Lily said to herself, staring out at the street from her bay window. Her phone started ringing from beside her and she picked it up, looking at the caller info. She smiled and pressed the answer button. "Grandpa!"
"Ah, the little birthday girl! Though, I don't think I can call you little anymore, you are 18 now."
"Yeah."
Lily's grandfather was her favorite person in the world. He always had the most whimsical stories to tell and was so full of imagination. He inspired the girl to dream and believe in those dreams. She loved him so much.
"Are you home right now?"
"Uh-huh. Why?"
"You might want to check your front door. There's something I had delivered for you."
That made her jump and race down the stairs to the door. Opening it she looked down and saw a small box at her feet, taking and bringing it inside. Excitement built up in her, wondering what her grandfather got her this year. It's always something wonderful like cute plushies or a fantasy book. She carefully cut the tap on the top and opened the flaps, revealing a jewelry box.
Opening it, she gasped.
Resting on a plush surface lay a pendant, more beautiful than anything Lily had ever seen. A big gemstone of bright blue surrounded by a barrier of gold on a golden chain. The jewel was so shiny, she could see her reflection in it.
She lifted it delicately, tracing the blue stone with her thumbs then putting it around her neck. It rested right over her heart, sparkling in the light. She was speechless.
"Lily?"
Remembering she was still on the phone, she raised it back to her ear. "Grandpa, I... I love it!" A laugh came from the other end. "I thought you would."
'Where did you get it?"
"I found the gem a long time ago, decided to keep it and eventually pass it on to someone. I knew you were the perfect candidate once you were born and I turned it into a necklace for you when the right time came."
"Oh, Grandpa. Thank you so much!"
A few seconds later the call ended. Lily looked in the hallway mirror, admiring how the necklace looked on her. It looked so magical. Best birthday present ever!
"I'll never take it off. Ever." Lily vowed to herself.
Little was she aware, however, that as she slept that night the pendant glowed for a brief period of time and it wasn't from the moonlight. There was more to it than meets the eye. Lily would soon find that out.
