MELANIE HEPBUR hated being alone, yet it seemed that no matter where she went, she was destined for solitude, forever the outcast at school.

For as long as she could remember, her classmates had bullied and ridiculed her, no matter if they were older or younger then her. In her small town, everyone knew her parents were different, and by association, so was she. Branded a weirdo, she was pushed to the bottom of every social circle.

When she and her parents moved, she hoped for a fresh start at a new school. The bullying wasn't as severe, but the labels stuck. She remained the odd one out, though she had long since accepted it.

Her parents had high hopes that things would change once she enrolled at Nevermore, a school for outcasts. And in some ways, they were right-she wasn't bullied anymore, and she wasn't a complete outcast. But even here, among fellow outsiders, she was still a loner, with only a handful of friends.

To make things much more complicated then she wished, Melanie had developed a crush on her roommate and best friend, Enid Sinclair. It was one of the reasons she planned to leave Nevermore and their friends behind. She couldn't lie to herself-part of her was running away because she had fallen in love with a girl who was clearly straight and far out of her league.

And yet here she was, sitting on her bed, which was in a corner of the room on the other side where their roommate would be, she didn't mind being in the corner, it brought her more comfort.

Melanie had a book in hand while her best friend (and crush) kept talking about how she was excited to meet their new roomate, at least Enid wouldn't be alone after she left.

"I can't wait to meet her!" Enid said excitedly while Melanie just nodded, continuing to read her book. Their new roomate was supposed to come soon, making Enid's excitement grow.

Melanie looked up from her book as she heard the door open, Principal Weems walked in alongside two adults in black and a teenage girl, their new roomate.

"It's so... vivid!" Melanie heard the man say as she put her book aside as she, alongside Enid who excitedly climbed off her bed to greet them.

"Howdy, roomie!" Enid said as she got in front of the girl while Melanie stood behind the blonde, waving her hand at the black haired girl.

Melanies could feel her heart skip a beat as she looked at the girl, her breath catching in her throat. The way the soft light framed Wednesday's dark, braided hair made her pale skin appear even more striking, contrasting sharply with the boldness of her raven-black dress. The white collar seemed to highlight her features-the sharp cut of her jaw, the piercing intensity of her eyes.
