Sabotage — The Beastie Boys

Lila and Peter made plenty of jokes about being back on American soil. The plastic caps completely coming off the bottles they belonged to, the enormous American flag that hung over the escalators as they descended into customs, the U.S. passport line being much shorter, all of it was just a constant reminder of being back home. And it was good to be home.

The couple held hands as they navigated their way to baggage claim and picked up their suitcases. They would have to part soon, for Lila's dad drove to a different part of the Arrivals terminal than May had. Peter was almost sad to see her go, until she turned to him and said, "I'll see you Thursday?"

"Thursday," Peter confirmed, smiling.

Lila kissed him, smiling when she said, "Don't even th-think about being late, Pete."

"Wouldn't dream of it." He watched her walk away, waving both times she looked back, a grin plastered on her face. Peter checked his phone, and saw that May had arrived and was waiting for him. He hurried out of the airport, only to see his aunt arguing with an airport security man.

"May!" He called, smiling as she perked up, her eyes searching until she found him.

"Ah! He's here!" She started jogging away from the officer, but not before yelling over her shoulder, "Don't give me a ticket!" When she reached him, May wrapped Peter in a huge hug. "Ooh, I'm so glad you're okay!"

"No, for real, I'm good," Peter answered, his smile turning a little bashful. "I'm actually really... fine."

May's smile turned smug, "Yeah, I'll bet you are." She waved him back over to the car, "Let's go, you're gonna have to tell me everything on the way back. But—" she held a bag out to him, and he accepted, "— I got you some hot, buttery bagels, too."

"Oh, thank you so much!" Peter's mouth watered, not realizing how much he'd craved a New York bagel.

"I know my boy," May said triumphantly.

Lila had suggested Wednesday be a day Peter spent with May, but she also knew if she left her laundry for longer than a day, she'd go insane. The thought of her clothes and her chores piling up before she could even enjoy her summer break was something of a spike that drove into her mind in annoyance.

So Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday were spent cleaning up and settling back into routine. It all started with an enormous hug from Ted at the airport, rocking her back and forth and scratching her face when he kissed her cheek. He took care of her luggage for her and drove her home, asking question after question about both of her trips.

He mostly then just asked about Peter, and what they both did together in Paris. Which became less of an interview, and more of a story swap, where Ted and Lila compared notes and compared trips. One would think he was just coming back from a trip to Paris, getting swept up in the memories of his own time with the woman he loved.

It warmed Lila's heart to remember her dad was a hopeless romantic.

They'd stopped at Delmar's on the way back home, Ted rushing in to pick up their usual sandwiches. When they arrived at their home in Sunnyside, the pair left the luggage by the door and sat down to a family meal. Lila scarfed down her sandwich in record time, helping out with dishes and trash before rushing over to her suitcase and presenting her father with the souvenirs she collected for him.

A couple magnets from Giverny, a few postcards featuring flowers in Paris, and she even managed to pick up a Johnny Hallyday record in some music store or other by Montmatre. She saved the best for last: Edith had found a journal of Angelina's in a box of her old things. It was one of the last journals she'd had when living in France, and it detailed all of when she met and fell in love with Ted. It was just something she forgot to bring with her, but Edith held onto it just in case.
