The Long Night

After weeks of blissful dates and stolen moments, the sun began to set on Ren and Ans' seemingly perfect world. Ren, whose photography skills had been growing in reputation, received a life-changing offer: a prestigious opportunity to showcase his work in an exhibition across Europe. It was everything he had dreamed of. But behind every dream lies a decision, and Ren was faced with one that weighed heavily on his heart. The opportunity meant leaving London for months, leaving Ans behind.

They had spent countless afternoons walking along the River Thames, laughing as the wind tousled their hair, their hands intertwined. Now, though, the air between them felt thick with uncertainty.

That night, Ren invited Ans to Primrose Hill, the place where they had often retreated to escape the rush of the city. Under the sprawling sky, with London twinkling beneath them, they found a patch of grass to sit on, the cool breeze playing with the edges of their coats. Ren hadn't yet told Ans about the offer, unsure of how to break the news. As they sat there, quietly watching the stars emerge one by one, Ans broke the silence.

"You've been quiet lately. Is something on your mind?" she asked, her voice soft but laced with concern.

Ren sighed, feeling the weight of her words. "I got an offer today," he began, turning to look at her, his heart pounding. "It's...big. Bigger than anything I've done before. They want me to do an exhibition of my work in Paris, Milan, Berlin-all across Europe."

Ans's face lit up, her eyes sparkling. "Ren, that's amazing!" she said, grabbing his hand. "You deserve this. You've worked so hard for it."

But as soon as the words left her lips, her expression shifted. She realized what it meant.

"And you'll be gone...for how long?" she asked, her voice growing quieter.

"Three months. Maybe more, depending on how it goes," Ren replied, his voice hesitant.

Ans's hand loosened its grip on his. The excitement that had flickered in her eyes began to fade. She looked away, her mind racing. Three months. Three months without seeing him, without their regular meet-ups, without the comfort of knowing he was just a text or a phone call away.

"I'm happy for you, Ren. I really am," she said, trying to mask the rising uncertainty in her voice. "But...what about us?"

Ren felt the question sting, even though he had anticipated it. He didn't know how to answer. He loved her deeply, more than he had ever thought possible, but he also knew that opportunities like this didn't come around often. If he didn't go, he might regret it forever. But if he left, would Ans still be there when he returned is she loyal enough?

"We'll figure it out," Ren said, trying to reassure her, though even he could hear the doubt in his own voice.

Ans gave him a small, sad smile. "I don't want to hold you back. I want you to go and live your dream. But...I'm scared, Ren. What if...what if things change while you're gone?"

He reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, his touch gentle but filled with the weight of all the things he couldn't say. "Nothing is going to change how I feel about you, Ans. I promise you that."

But promises made under the stars often feel fragile when daylight comes. They sat in silence for a while longer, the twinkling city lights below them a reminder that life would keep moving forward, whether they were ready for it or not.

Later, as they walked back down the hill, Ans slipped her hand into his. Her grip was firm, but Ren could sense the tension beneath it. She wasn't sure if this was the beginning of the end, or if their love was strong enough to withstand the coming distance.

That night, Ans lay awake in bed, staring at her phone, rereading old messages from Ren. Part of her wanted to tell him that she would wait for him, that three months wasn't so long in the grand scheme of things. But another part of her feared that time apart would change everything. What if he met someone new, someone more exciting and adventurous, in one of those glittering European cities? What if the distance made them both realize that what they had was just a fleeting romance?

Meanwhile, Ren tossed and turned in his own bed, his mind replaying the conversation at Primrose Hill. He had always been so sure of his feelings for Ans, but now doubt was creeping in. Could love survive months of separation? Could they continue to be what they were when their entire relationship had been built on being together, sharing experiences, and exploring the city side by side?

The days that followed were filled with a growing tension neither of them could shake. Ren tried to throw himself into preparing for the exhibition, but every time he looked at his camera, he thought of Ans. He wondered if capturing the beauty of Europe would be enough to fill the emptiness he already felt creeping into his heart.

Ans, on the other hand, went about her daily routine with a sense of dread. She tried to be supportive, but the fear of losing Ren consumed her. Even their dates, which were once filled with joy and laughter, now felt tinged with a sadness neither of them could ignore.

As the day of Ren's departure loomed closer, the weight of what they were about to face became impossible to ignore. Ans tried to put on a brave face, but when Ren finally boarded the plane, she felt a piece of her heart leave with him. And so began the longest night, a night that stretched over months as they both tried to navigate life without the other by their side.

Ans stood in her room, staring at the tulip Ren had given her from the garden the night before. She didn’t know what the future held, but she clung to the promise Ren had made. No matter how far apart they were, they wouldn’t let silence or fear tear them apart.
