XXIV. Moonlight Reverie

As the sun began to set over the seashore beside the Collegium, Caerus and Heid set up a small campfire, the flames dancing and flickering in the gentle evening breeze. They toasted to their victories, the challenges they faced, and the growth they had experienced, all while laughing and reminiscing about their journey so far.

Heid pulled out some snacks he'd snuck along, while Caerus tried to convince him once again about the idea of drinking to celebrate. "Come on, Heid, just one drink! I’m not a kid anymore!" Caerus pouted, waving his hand in the air dramatically.

"You're still sixteen, and as much as you want to act all grown-up, you're still my responsibility." Heid smirked, keeping a protective but teasing eye on Caerus. "You're not getting away with it that easily."

"But Heid...," Caerus whined, playfully tugging at Heid’s sleeve. "Just a little?"

"Nope. Water it is." Heid raised a bottle of sparkling water with a grin. "We’ll celebrate responsibly!"

"You're no fun," Caerus grumbled, but the good-natured tone in his voice made it clear he wasn’t really upset. Heid handed him the bottle, and they both sat back, watching the stars slowly appear in the sky.

After the campfire talk, they took to the seashore, splashing around in the water as they teased each other with their magic. Caerus, with a wave of his hand, created shimmering pathways of light across the surface, while Heid sent little ripples and waves to disrupt Caerus' careful formations. The two laughed, carefree, letting the water and magic wash away the weight of their burdens.

Finally, exhausted from the play, they floated on the water, staring up at the moonlit sky. The reflection of the stars danced on the surface as they floated side by side, their breaths steadying after all the laughter. The serene moment caught them both off guard as they found themselves just… being, in each other’s company. Panting slightly, their eyes met, both of them glistening with droplets of water, the tension of the day and their bond unspoken but palpable.

They floated there, lost in the moment under the moonlight.

As Caerus and Heid floated in the night sky, suspended by their powers, the moonlight illuminated the scene around them, casting a soft glow on the rippling ocean below. They hovered, soaked in the sea’s water, panting from their playful splashing and magic-filled celebration.

The world felt quiet in that moment, with just the sound of the waves crashing in the distance. Caerus glanced at Heid, the water reflecting off Heid’s face, making his features shine under the moon’s soft light. Heid’s breath was steady now, but his eyes held a mix of emotions—relief, joy, and something deeper, harder to describe.

Caerus blinked, his heart racing slightly as he met Heid’s gaze. The playful tension between them seemed to shift into something more intimate, a quiet acknowledgment of everything they’d been through together—the battles, the revelations, the shared burdens.

“Light,” Heid whispered, his voice soft but clear, “do you ever think... what all of this means?”

Caerus hesitated, then smiled gently. “You mean what we’re doing here? Celebrating after almost dying, again?”

Heid chuckled, shaking his head lightly. “No, not just that. I mean us. How we always end up here—together, no matter what happens.”

Caerus felt his chest tighten slightly, but in a good way. “I guess... you’ve always been there for me, Heid. Through everything.”

Heid’s lips curled into a soft smile. “And I always will be.”

They floated silently for a moment, letting the weight of those words hang in the air between them. Caerus felt a warmth spreading through him, despite the coolness of the night.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen next,” Caerus finally said, his voice barely above a whisper. “But I do know one thing.”

Heid raised an eyebrow, curious. “What’s that?”

Caerus met his eyes, his voice steady. “I’m glad I have you by my side.”

Heid’s smile grew wider, and for the first time in a while, everything felt right. The weight of their destinies, their battles, their fears—it all faded away for that one perfect moment.

And for the rest of the night, under the glowing moon and sparkling stars, they stayed there, side by side, letting the quiet peace of their bond speak louder than words.
