Vanika... uth jao beta, school ke liye fir se late ho jaogi!" Vanika's mother called out from the kitchen, her voice ringing clearly despite the entire floor between them.
The smell of parathas and the sharp tone of her mother's wake-up call cut through Vanika's sleep like an alarm.
But Vanika, snug in her bed, only pulled her blanket closer, pretending she didn't hear a thing.
Vanika wasn't an early riser, and her mother knew this battle well. Downstairs, she paused from flipping parathas and, gripping the spatula firmly, started her determined climb up the stairs. Her footsteps grew louder with each step, and soon, her voice echoed through the hallway.
"Uth ja, Vanika! Mai tumhare liye aloo ke parathe bana rahi hu!" she called, her voice carrying both love and a strict warning.
Burrowed in her blanket, Vanika groaned, irritation creeping into her half-asleep voice. "Haan toh main tave pe thodi na so rahi hu, Mumma!" she mumbled, her tone playful yet tired.
Her mother wasn't one to let a morning battle slide so easily. Without missing a beat, she shot back, "Agar 5 minute mein nahane nahi gayi toh wahi tawa tumhare sar pe padega!"
Sighing, Vanika knew this routine too well. She opened her eyes just enough to call back, "Okay, okay, only 5 min more," and with that, she turned over, secretly hoping her mother would leave her alone for a little longer.
She heard her mother's footsteps recede down the stairs and allowed herself a satisfied grin as she drifted off again, figuring she'd earned those extra five minutes.
But, five minutes soon turned into fifteen. She was blissfully deep into her morning nap, feeling the warmth of her blanket, when something stirred her senses.
Through the quiet of the house, she could make out the sound of light footsteps and the soft jingle of her mother's payal approaching her room again. Her heart skipped a beat.
Fully alert now, she sat up instantly, realizing she was in big trouble. Her mother had already warned her once, and this time, there would be no escape if she caught Vanika still in bed.
Without a second thought, Vanika threw off her blanket, grabbed her clothes and towel, and dashed for the bathroom.
Just as she clicked the door shut behind her, she heard her mother's footsteps pause outside her room.
But her mother knew her daughter's tricks all too well. Smiling to herself, she muttered, "Ye nahi sudhregi," shaking her head before heading back downstairs.
