The trip to Sketch Skate wasn’t really long. Like everything else, it was down hill from Kaoru’s house. All Kojiro really had to do, was steer them around obstacles. They rolled along the sidewalks, bumped over curbs every once in a while, before coming up to the small lone building.
It sat near the back of a vacant lot. Once upon a time there had been a pretty large building here, but it burned down some years ago. The owners of the small skate shop had purchased the corner of the lot. They hadn’t yet built the little shop, before the fire started. Now it was the only building on a large plot of land.
Most days, the cement coated parking lot was filled with skateboarders. They ramped over the debris, slide railed along the steps, did jumps and Ollie’s over the rocks or whatever struck their fancy. Here was a peaceful little escape from reality for so many.
Currently, there didn’t seem to be another soul around. That wasn’t all that unusual either. It was pretty early. Plus, last night’s rain hadn’t completely dried on the sidewalks. Many skaters didn’t like getting their wheels wet. Kojiro guided them up to the front door. Kaoru hopped off.
He said nothing as he strolled inside. Kojiro placed his board in a stack of cubbies to the side of the shop designed for this very reason. He stepped inside to an interesting sight.
Kaoru stood in the very center of the store. The fan he had brought with him, tapping upon his chin. Before him, on the counter sat what looked to be a tiny dog. It was yapping/ barking at the newcomers that had entered its domain. No one was listening to it. Behind the counter stood two teenaged boys.
One had unruly red hair. He attempted to tame it with a head band, but anyone could see it was a pitiful attempt at best. Basically, the headband just kept the hair out of the guys eyes. Facing him, with a stoic expression, was a teen slightly taller. His blueish hair hung long past his collar. He was just looking at the red haired teen.
The red haired boy was yelling, but not in an angry way. More like he was over excited about something. He kept waving his hands around in the air. Kaoru watched as they still didn’t know he was there.
“Reki!” Kojiro called.
“Oh hey!” the red head turned to face them. He went from his story to greeting them with no in between.
“The garbage spilled all over the back lot.” The blue haired teen muttered.
“What? Again!” Reki cried.
“Go get the broom.” A man in overalls said as he came out of the back part of the shop.
“What brings you two in today?” He asked seeing the teens.
“The rail on the Cornway bridge is busted.” Kaoru said.
“Oh yeah, Miya nearly lost his board over there the other day.” Reki was handing one broom to Langa.
“Langa and I had to grab him before he hit open air.” He went on.
