"Azi!" Gia rushed up to me, hugging my knees as tightly as her little arms could. I cooed at the new nickname she'd given me — Azi, never heard that one before.
After Saturday, I guess her and I were besties now. Today would be the first day her and I would be left alone.
I glanced up and saw Shane standing there, as well as Meg come up behind him. Her usual sunny demeanor was diminished but my god she looked beautiful in the grey blazer she wore. Her black button down blouse was tucked into her long work pants. She wore a bit of makeup which helped to accentuate her features — but even without, Meg was still stunning. She locked eyes with me briefly, the warmth from yesterday almost completely missing.
Did I do something wrong?
We spent hours in that cafe yesterday, talking about the most random things. I learned a lot though — she's a corporate lawyer, she's 32, they recently moved to Sonoma from a different part of Cali and her favorite color is purple. An odd assortment of information, but I'd be happy to listen to her talk about anything.
"Goodmorning Azalia, Meg and I are off to work. Meg should be home by 5, be good Gia." He said, speaking as if I wasn't worth his time. I didn't care much though, I wasn't here for validation. I was here for a job.
I bent down to pick Gia up in my arms as she smiled brightly looking at me. A carbon copy of her mother, so cute. Speaking of her mother, Meg hadn't spoken a word. In fact she seemed to stare through me as she held her purse and walked to follow Shane who'd gone towards the car.
"Have a great day sweet pea." She brought her hand up to Gia's cheek, finger brushing over her freckles. Gia giggled quietly, "Bye mama."
Meg's eyes came up to me, which made me jump a bit because I was already looking at her. Her blueish green orbs lingering on mine as no words escaped her.
"Have a good day at work, Gia and I will have so much fun." I offered a smile, watching as her glare continued to linger on me. The corners of her mouth turned up, a very tiny smile flashing onto her face.
"See you later, Azalia." She spoke, before walking past me.

"Gia, this isn't funny!" I felt panicky as I made a mental note to myself: no more hide and seek with this child. We'd been playing for an hour and the second it was her turn to hide, I can't even find her!
Usually her giggles would give me a clue as to where she was and then she'd peek out and I'd have to pretend like I didn't see her — but this time, I couldn't even hear her giggles. I eagerly climbed to the second level of the house, feeling Ivy sniff my feet as I did so.
"Ivy, not the time. Use your nose and find the child instead!" I whispered, reaching the second floor and taking a glance around. The entire living room was quiet, and all of the doors were shut except one.
The master bedroom.
I wasn't sure if it's been left open by Meg or Shane or if that little stinker had hid in there. Only one way to find out.
"Gia, are you in here? Come out, hide and seeks over and you're kinda scaring me." I called out as I entered the room. I felt like an intruder, somewhere I wasn't supposed to be. The room was huge, it was carpeted with a large bed with an unnecessary amount of pillows on it. A small giggle ripped my focus away from the environment as I smiled to myself and dropped to my knees.
