chapter 11
mainlandangie loved kildare island, but every once in a while, she needed to escape. on the second weekend of each month, she and sarah would take the ferry to the mainland. it had become a tradition ever since their parents trusted them to go on their own. they'd spend the day shopping, grabbing lunch, or visiting museums—an unspoken ritual that angie looked forward to every time. today was that day.
her eyes darted to the clock on her bedside table. 8:34 am. she had about an hour to make it to sarah's for the 10am ferry. rolling out of bed, angie quickly got dressed and gathered her essentials into her chanel crossbody bag. the summer heat was already stifling, so by the time she decided to walk to the cameron's, she regretted it halfway there.
she knocked on the door, expecting sarah to greet her, but instead, it was the one person she hoped not to see. rafe stood in the doorway, looking as casual as ever. angie sighed, already mentally rolling her eyes. she still didn't want to speak to him.
"is sarah ready?" she asked, sounding more annoyed than she intended.
rafe smirked, leaning against the doorframe. "sarah's not here. said she was picking you up. she left at eight."
"why would she do that if the ferry is at ten?" she asked him, his eyes rolling.
he shrugged, amusement flickering in his eyes. "your guess is as good as mine, angel... but if i had my guess, my darling sister's probably ditched you."
"she wouldn't ditch me." angie returned, though a sinking feeling told her rafe might be right. if sarah had come by at 8, she'd have just come in like she always did. angie huffed, brushing past rafe into the house without waiting for an invitation. he sighed, shutting the door and following behind her into the living room.
the cameron house was, as usual, like a page ripped out of a designer catalog—rich, elegant, and intimidating. it never failed to make angie feel like she was walking into a mansion from some old-money dream.
rafe, however, seemed perfectly at ease, stretching out on the couch across from her. his eyes flicked to her as she tapped her fingers impatiently against her thighs, glancing at her watch every few seconds. he studied her for a moment, then turned to look out the window.
"you don't have to sit here." angie stated.
"well where else am i going to sit angel? theres nobody else here." he muttered, kicking his feet up onto the coffee table. she checked her watch, he watched her. it was a rolex; it hadn't surprised him. 9:35am. "where are you two supposed to be going anyway?"
"mainland." she replied shortly.
"for what? isn't there enough here?" he asked.
"god, you're such a boy." she mumbled, "maybe there's enough here for you, but i udon't play golf, or fish, or drink beer at the country club."
"oh." he nodded. it was silent.
she checked her watch again with a sigh. 9:40am. sarah would have to appear at the door that second if they wanted to make it to the ferry. angie eyed the door. nothing. there was no sign of sarah and angie sighed again.
"right. get up." rafe ordered, his voice stern. he had stood from his seat and looked at angie expectantly.
she raised her brows, was he really kicking her out? "what, are you kicking me out now?"
