chapter 4
buzz kill

once again, angie had been roped into attending another party, this time a strict kook only event. sarah had told her that she and topper would remain by her side for the entirety of the night and after much debate she had finally gave in. angie wasn't a push over, in fact, she actually felt excited.

she grabbed her curling iron, her mind buzzing with the excitement of kelce's party. she carefully sectioned her hair, curling strands into bouncy waves that cascaded down her back. with each twist of the iron, she felt more like herself, more ready for the night ahead.

once she was satisfied with her hair, she turned her attention to her makeup. she opted for a light touch: a bit of mascara to emphasize her bright blue eyes, a hint of blush, and a soft gloss. she knew tonight was about having fun, not about attracting attention, but it felt good to look good.

she had just pulled her shorts on as sarah burst into her bedroom, a rosy tint filling her cheeks. she looked extremely flustered and angie couldn't help but smirk. "you okay?" angie asked.

"yeah. fine." sarah blurted, earning a knowing look from angie. "it just got a bit heated in the car."

angie could feel eyes burning into her as sarah leant against the door frame. truth be told, angie didn't like when sarah first started dating topper. he was her best friend and she supposed she was quite afraid that sarah was going to take him away from her. her hatred didn't last for long, in fact it barely lasted ten minutes.

"actually, angie... i was wondering if, well if, whether you had any... erm." sarah stuttered, her complexion slowly turning redder by the second.

"sarah, are you asking me for condoms?" angie asked making her face glow a bright cherry red.

"kind of." sarah responded awkwardly. without missing a beat, angie had placed two small square wrappers into sarah's hand. she had no use for them, her mother had forced them upon her as soon as she turned 16. "oh, thanks."

"lets go." angie grinned, grabbing sarah's arm and leading her to topper's car which was parked haphazardly in the driveway.

"everything okay?" topper asked as the girls hopped into the car.

"fine, you got the goods?" angie asked excitedly, watching as topper picked up a bottle of vodka. she unscrewed the cap and took a large gulp, handing it to sarah who did the same. it wasn't long before they arrived at kelce's house, crowds of teens had already gathered and began to drink any sort of alcohol they could get their hands on. her eyes wandered the front lawn, familiar faces surrounding her, all buzzed and swaying around.

"yo! angie!" kelce shouted as she walked through the door with topper and sarah, he slipped his arm around her shoulder and her friends didn't seem to notice, carrying on deeper into the house.

"hey kelce, nice party." angie smiled, gently shrugging his arm off her. his face flooded with dismay but angie was used to this reaction.

"drink?" kelce asked, offering the girl the drink from his hand.

"no thanks." she knew better, she never accepted a drink she didn't pour herself. not anymore.

her eyes scanned the room, settling on a familiar figure sat in front of the wooden coffee table, lines of white powder and rolled up dollar bills filled the glass centre. rafe. usually, his eyes would be drawn to the glass, however instead his focus rested upon the girl whom kelce had now wrapped his arm around for the second time. he had watched this happen on numerous occasions, and each time he couldn't help the smile that grew from his lips every time she pushed him off. it was nonchalant but assertive, so much so that kelce did not attempt to replace his arm and instead stood looking defeated - as he always did. his mind hadn't stopped racing since their game of fuck, marry, kill; he had half expected her to kill him so was more than pleasantly surprised when she didn't. rafe watched intently as angie's eyes scanned the room, immediately averting his stare as she glanced his way, but he knew her eyes had scanned the table - just as she knew his eyes had scanned her.
