Marlowe needed out of the house. Her parents were fighting about who knows what and she wasn't going to stick around to pick a side. The Alpha and Luna of the Harper pack were a spirited couple. Saul and Leena often put their only daughter in the middle of their tiffs, but tonight Marlowe was not in the mood. She slowly crept down the steps.
"Since Marlowe is a woman. A woman that you refuse to let become alpha of this pack because of your precious 'rules', who do you suppose will lead us?" Marlowe heard her mother yell at her father. "We can merge with Alpha Crane. Other packs have done it. And they seem to be thriving!"
Marlowe, now down the stairs, was making her way past her father's office when she heard him say, "You know he's been searching for the white wolf since he started his little escapade. If we merge with them and he discovers who she is, he will for sure turn her into a killing machine."
"Save it Saul!" Her mom hissed. "She already is a killing machine, she's just your killing machine right now and you don't want to share." Marlowe flinched at the words her mom spat out. She crept past the office and headed out the door.
The words her mother spoke were true. Now 24, she had been killing, spying, and deceiving since she shifted at 13. All for the pack. All for her dad. She was everything to this pack, yet she couldn't lead. Correction, her father wouldn't let her lead.
She mindlinked her father:
She's right. Merge with this Alpha and become a part of the most powerful pack in the world. He can have someone take over as Alpha for you.
She made it to the woods when she heard:
These new age Alphas are no joke, kid. I want to find your mate, get married, and have kids, not be this man's killing machine.... Where are you going?
She mind linked back:
Out, Don't wait up...
She disconnected the mind link and she walked in silence. She was going to her favorite spot. The river bank. Marlowe knew she wasn't supposed to leave pack grounds, but she needed to think. She needed to cry. And that's what she did. Her tears poured down her cheeks and all those "not good enough" feelings that she had been holding on to came out. What she wanted to do was apologize to her father. Why wasn't she a man? Why was her mom cursed to never have more children? And no matter how many battles she won, people she saved, or policies she put into place to better the pack she wasn't enough. The alpha title needed to be passed down from a man to a man. At least that is how her father and his advisors saw it. Yet, she blamed herself for not being the son her dad wanted. She blamed herself for not being better. Maybe if Marlowe was a tab bit better, then, he would bend the rules.
"Fuck" she says. Her crying was uncontrollably now. she needed to stop walking for a moment. She sat down next to a tree and began to weep. It was completely dark, but with her heightened vision she could see everything. She knew exactly where she was. After about 5 minutes worth of a good cry, a noise came from the bushes. Marlowe knew she wasn't in any danger because she was still on pack lands. But she didn't know who it was until she smelled the infamous lavender and honey smell of her godmother.
"Darling, why are you crying?" Esmeralda's voice was unusually cheerful. "Father being a misogynist again." She said as she rolled her eyes and chuckled.
Marlowe laughed too. "He's a -"
"Traditionalist" the women said at the same time. They both laughed some more.
Esmeralda sat next to Marlowe. She handed her signature handkerchief and said, "Here, wipe those eyes. And why did you leave the house without any make up?"
