You and Jin have been best friends for as long as you can remember. From the moment you met in elementary school, something just clicked.
You were inseparable, understanding each other in ways that no one else could. Lately, though, things have been different. Jin has been acting... well, different. More attentive, nicer than usual.
Today, as you both head to the mall, you can't help but wonder if something has changed between you two.
The sun casts a warm glow on your tan skin as you step out of the car. Jin rushes to your side, opening the door for you. "After you, my chocolate princess," he says with a playful bow.
You laugh, shaking your head. "What's with you today? Usually, you'd be racing to let the door close on me."
"Just felt like being a gentleman is that so wrong?" he shrugs.
You roll your eyes but can't help the smile tugging at your lips. As you walk through the entrance, Jin stays close, his hand occasionally brushing against yours. It's a small gesture, but it sends a shiver down your spine.
"Where to first?" he asks, looking around.
"Hollister," you say, pointing in the direction of the store.
As you browse through the racks of clothes, Jin stays close by, occasionally picking out an item and holding it up for your approval.
"How about this one?" he asks, holding up a soft, pastel-colored sweater.
"It's cute," you say, taking it from him to get a closer look.
After you've gathered a few items to try on, you head to the fitting rooms. Jin waits patiently outside, scrolling through his phone. When you come out, he looks up and gives you a thumbs-up.
"That looks great on you," he says, genuinely impressed.
You end up buying more than you planned, as usual and as you exit the store, Jin offers to carry your bags.
"Are you sure?" you ask, knowing how he usually teases you about buying too much.
"Of course," he says, taking the bags from your hands. "I don't mind."
"Jin, I can carry my own stuff," you protest, but he shakes his head.
"Nah, let me. It's the least I can do."
You watch him with confusion in your eyes. This isn't the Jin you know. The Jin you know would've told you to only buy what you can carry. As you move from store to store, he continues to hold doors open and carry your bags.
"Okay, seriously, what's going on?" you finally ask, "Why are you being so... nice?"
Jin looks at you, his expression softening. "Can't a guy just be nice to his best friend?"
"Not when that guy is you," you tease, nudging him with your elbow.
He laughs, but there's a hint of nervousness in his eyes. "Alright, you caught me. I just... I wanted to show you how much you mean to me. You've always been there for me, and I guess I wanted to return the favor."
Your heart skips a beat. The sincerity in his voice, the way he looks at you—it's all so overwhelming. "Jin, you don't have to do all this to show me that. I know you care."
"I know, but I wanted to anyway," he says, reaching out to tuck a stray curl behind your ear. The gesture is so intimate that it leaves you breathless.
You look away, trying to hide the blush creeping up your cheeks. "Well, thank you. It means a lot."
You both stay silent for a while until you say, "I'm kinda craving Starbucks right now."
"To Starbucks we go," he replies, playfully taking your hand and leading the way.
The line at Starbucks is long, but Jin doesn't seem to mind. He chats with you, making you laugh with his silly jokes.
When it's finally your turn to order, you pick out your favorite fall drink, a complicated concoction on the pricier side.
"Hi, can I have an iced doppio with 2 pumps of white chocolate mocha sauce, 2 pumps of pumpkin sauce, light ice, extra creamer, and salted caramel cold foam in a venti cup please?"
"That's a really feminine drink for a guy," she remarks, assuming you were ordering for Jin.
You shake your head, smiling politely. "No, it's for me."
The barista's expression shifts, and she mutters under her breath, "Black girls shouldn't be ordering Starbucks."
Jin immediately steps in, his face flushed with anger. "Excuse me? You can't talk to her like that."
"Let's be honest, she doesn't even look like she can afford it."
You could feel the sting of her words. You've always been self conscious about your culture growing up in a predominately white neighborhood, and apparently even Starbucks workers have something negative to say about you.
You place a hand on Jin's arm, trying to calm him down. "It's fine Jin, let's just get the drink and go."
Even though you were hurt, you didn't want to let the barista's ignorance ruin your day. You just wanted to enjoy your favorite drink.
"Then I'm paying," Jin says, pulling out his wallet before you can protest.
"Jin, it's like fifteen dollars," you say, feeling a bit guilty.
"It's fine," he insists, handing over the money to the barista. "My treat."
You thank him and take your drink, savoring the rich, sweet flavor. The two of you find a cozy spot to sit and talk, watching the people pass by.
As you sip your drink, you can't help but feel content. Jin's presence is comforting, and his unexpected kindness today has been really touching.
"Jin, is there something you want to tell me?"
He pauses, taking a deep breath before looking at you. "Actually, there's something I've been meaning to talk to you about," he says, his voice steady but his eyes betraying a hint of vulnerability.
Your heart skips a beat. "What is it?" you ask, feeling a mixture of anticipation and anxiety.
Jin takes your hand, holding it gently. "I... I think I've been feeling something more than just friendship for a while now," he admits, his cheeks flushing slightly. "I didn't want to ruin what we have, but I can't keep pretending that I don't have these feelings for you. I love you Y/N."
The world seems to slow down as you process his words. Your mind races, but deep down, you realize that you've been feeling the same way. You squeeze his hand, giving him a reassuring smile.
"Jin, I've been feeling the same way. I love you too," you confess, your voice barely above a whisper.
A look of relief washes over his face, and he pulls you into a tight hug. "I'm so glad to hear that," he murmurs into your hair. "I was so scared of losing you."
You pull back slightly, looking into his eyes. "You could never lose me, Jin. No matter what happens, we'll always have each other."
