Chapter name : Into the Abyss
We ran for what felt like miles, the city streets stretching out before us like an endless maze. My lungs burned, and my legs felt like they might give out at any moment, but I couldn't stop. Not with the echoes of those men's voices still ringing in my ears. Not with the danger that loomed over me like a shadow.
Beside me, the girl—whose name I still didn't know—moved with a desperate urgency, her eyes darting nervously toward every passing car, every flicker of movement in the darkness. She knew the stakes, and so did I. If they found us, there'd be no second chances.
Finally, we reached a small, run-down park on the outskirts of the city. The swings creaked softly in the wind, the playground deserted, bathed in the eerie glow of a distant streetlamp. We collapsed onto a bench, both of us gasping for air. My body ached, my muscles screaming in protest, but for now, we were safe.
"I don't even know your name," I said between ragged breaths, breaking the heavy silence that hung between us.
She glanced at me, her face pale and gaunt under the faint light. "I'm Ava," she replied softly. Her voice was still laced with fear, but there was a strength in her eyes that hadn't been there before.
"Ahiya," I said, offering a weak smile, though my mind was racing. I needed answers. "Ava, who are these people? What do they want with you?"
For a moment, Ava hesitated, her gaze flickering down to her trembling hands. She seemed to be wrestling with herself, deciding how much to reveal. Finally, she sighed, her shoulders slumping in defeat.
"They're part of a network," she began, her voice barely above a whisper. "A very dangerous one. They deal in... everything. Drugs, weapons, human trafficking. I was part of their operation. I didn't want to be, but I didn't have a choice."
A chill ran down my spine. "Human trafficking?" I echoed, the words feeling heavy on my tongue.
Ava nodded, her eyes haunted. "I was taken when I was sixteen. They smuggled me in from Eastern Europe, forced me into... situations. I thought I'd never get out, but I managed to escape a few months ago. They've been hunting me ever since. They don't leave loose ends."
Her words hit me like a punch to the gut. This was much worse than I had imagined. I thought I had just gotten tangled up in some random crime, but this was something far darker and more insidious.
"Why did that man come into the bakery?" I asked, my mind spinning with the pieces of the puzzle that still didn't fit. "Why did he ask for help?"
Ava's expression darkened. "He was one of them. A lower-level guy, but he knew too much. I think he was trying to cut a deal with someone, maybe the cops, maybe a rival gang. But when you try to betray these people..." She trailed off, the implication clear.
I swallowed hard, my throat dry. "So, they killed him."
"And now they're after us," Ava finished, her voice hollow. "Because we know too much. Even if we didn't mean to get involved, they can't risk us talking to anyone."
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. This was bad—worse than I had realized. I was caught in the crossfire of something far bigger than I could handle. But I couldn't just walk away now. I had to protect Fia and Sean. And somehow, I had to protect Ava too.
"We can't stay here," I said, my voice firmer than I felt. "They'll find us. We need to figure out our next move."
Ava looked at me with a mixture of fear and determination. "There's someone who might be able to help," she said quietly. "Someone who used to work for them but got out. He's been helping people escape their reach. I don't know if we can trust him, but he's our only shot."
"Where is he?" I asked, feeling a flicker of hope.
Ava hesitated, then pulled out a crumpled piece of paper from her pocket. "He operates out of an abandoned warehouse by the docks. It's risky, but if we can get there, he might help us disappear."
I took a deep breath, weighing our options. It was risky, but what choice did we have? Staying in one place wasn't an option. These men were relentless, and they wouldn't stop until they had us both silenced.
"Let's go," I said, standing up and offering Ava a hand.
