Jennie sat alone in her bedroom that night, staring blankly at the phone. The events of the day played over and over in her mind. She wished she could talk to someone — anyone — but this wasn't something she could even confide to Rosie. The shame and fear were too overwhelming.
A message from Rosie popped up on her screen: You okay? You seemed off today.
Jennie hesitated, fingers hovering over the keyboard. What was she supposed to say? That she'd just agreed to mess with someone's feelings? That she felt like the worst person on earth?
I'm fine. Just a lot on my mind, she replied, keeping it vague.
Rosie's response was quick: I'm here if you need to talk. Take care, Jennie.
Jennie sighed, putting her phone down. If only she could tell Rosie everything. But for now, she had to figure out how to navigate this dangerous game. She had no choice but to protect herself and keep Nancy at bay, no matter what it took.
