The days turned into a blur of emotions after that harrowing night on the bridge. Time seemed to flow differently — slow yet fleeting, each moment heavy with the weight of unspoken feelings and lingering fears. Lisa found herself constantly on edge, every creak of the floorboards or rustle of the leaves outside making her heart race, reminding her of the fragile state she was still in.
Meanwhile, Jennie was determined. After witnessing Lisa on the brink of taking her own life, a fierce protectiveness had awakened within her. She had never felt such fear — fear of losing someone she loved so deeply. Every day since that night, Jennie made it her mission to be there for Lisa, to show her that she was not alone. No matter how much pain Lisa was in, Jennie wanted her to know she could lean on her, to trust her again.
"Lisa, please," Jennie pleaded one afternoon, her voice tinged with a mix of hope and desperation. They sat together on the couch in Jennie's living room, sunlight streaming through the windows, casting a warm glow around them. Lisa was wrapped in a blanket, her eyes downcast as she picked at the fabric, clearly lost in thought. "I know things are still tough, but you don't have to face this alone. Just... stay with me for a while."
Lisa sighed, feeling the familiar weight of her emotions pressing down on her. "Jennie, I appreciate it, but I don't think it's a good idea. I need to figure things out on my own. I don't want to be a burden," she replied softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jennie shook her head, a determination flaring in her eyes. "You could never be a burden to me. You're my everything, Lisa. I just want you to be safe. What if something like that happens again? What if I'm not there next time?"
The thought of Jennie's worry tugged at Lisa's heart, but she still hesitated. "I don't want to feel like I'm intruding in your space, Jennie. You've done enough for me already."
Jennie leaned closer, desperation etched across her features. "What if I promise that I'll give you your space? You can set some ground rules, and I'll follow them. Just please, let me take care of you. I'll do whatever it takes."
Lisa felt a pang of guilt at the sincerity in Jennie's voice. She wanted so badly to say yes, to accept the comfort of having Jennie close, but the fear of vulnerability held her back. After a long pause, she finally murmured, "Okay fine, but only if I can set some conditions."
Jennie's eyes lit up with hope, and she nodded eagerly. "Anything, just name it."
Lisa took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "First, I need my own space. I don't want to feel like I'm invading your life. I'll stay with you, but I want to have a room that's just mine. I need to feel like I have a place to retreat to when I need it."
"Of course!" Jennie replied immediately, her enthusiasm infectious. "You can have the guest room. I'll make sure it's exactly how you want it. Just tell me what you need."
"Second," Lisa continued, her voice steadying as she gained confidence. "I want you to respect my feelings. There will be days when I might not want to talk, days when I feel angry or sad. I don't want you to take it personally. I need time to process everything that's happened."
Jennie nodded solemnly, her expression earnest. "I understand, Lisa. I'll do my best to give you space when you need it. Just promise me that you'll still talk to me when you're ready."
"Lastly," Lisa said, her voice firm, "I want us to take things slow. I'm not ready to jump back into things like before. I need time to heal, and I don't want you to rush me into anything."
"I can do that," Jennie promised, her eyes softening with understanding. "I'll wait for you, no matter how long it takes. I just want you to be okay."
Lisa felt a swell of emotion at Jennie's words. They made her feel warm and safe, yet there was also a flicker of fear. She was terrified of letting Jennie in completely, afraid of being hurt again. But deep down, she also longed for that connection, for the love that had once made her feel so alive.
With a hesitant smile, Lisa finally agreed, "Alright, I'll stay with you. Just promise me you won't smother me or push me to talk if I'm not ready."
Jennie's face broke into a radiant smile, and relief flooded her features. "I promise, Lisa. I won't push you. Just having you here is enough for me."
As Lisa settled into her new life at Jennie's condominium, it felt surreal. The space was filled with warmth and comfort, decorated with personal touches that reflected Jennie's vibrant personality. The guest room was cozy, with soft bedding and warm colors that made it feel inviting. It was a place where Lisa could breathe, a refuge from the storms swirling in her mind.
In the days that followed, Jennie did everything she could to make Lisa feel welcome. She cooked her favorite meals, stocked up on snacks Lisa liked, and made sure the guest room was a sanctuary. But as much as Jennie tried, there were still days when Lisa would retreat into her shell, haunted by the memories that refused to fade.
One evening, as they sat together in the living room, Jennie attempted to lighten the mood. "You know," she began, a teasing glint in her eye, "I was thinking about redecorating this place. Maybe we could turn the guest room into a fun, themed room. How about a cozy library where we can read together?"
Lisa chuckled softly, grateful for Jennie's efforts to lift her spirits. "That sounds nice, but I think I just need it to be a quiet space for now. Maybe later?"
"Later, then," Jennie replied with a playful grin, before her expression turned serious. "But if you ever want to talk, I'm here, okay?"
Lisa nodded, her heart swelling with affection for the girl beside her. She knew that Jennie was trying her best, and it meant more than she could express. They spent the evening watching movies, the familiar rhythm of laughter and banter easing some of the tension that had settled over them since that fateful night.
Yet, even amidst the laughter, Lisa still felt the remnants of her sorrow lurking in the corners of her mind. There were moments when the darkness would creep in, threatening to pull her back into the depths of despair. But she was determined to fight, to try and find her way back to the light.
One night, as she lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, she thought about how far she had come. The road to healing would be long and difficult, but with Jennie by her side, she felt a flicker of hope igniting within her — a small flame that she could nurture and protect.
For the first time in a long time, Lisa allowed herself to dream of a future that could be different, a future where she wouldn't have to bear the weight of her pain alone. And while she still had much to work through, she felt a glimmer of possibility blossoming within her, and that was enough.
