MACKENZIE'S POV

Crystal and I walked into class, the usual hum of chatter filling the room. As we took our seats, my gaze instinctively drifted toward Daniel, who sat a few rows across from us. He was leaning back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest , his expression unreadable as always. My eyes lingered on him for a moment , and I found myself wondering what was going on in that head of his.

After Saturday night, I couldn't help but feel a strange tension between us. He'd stepped in, defended me, but then acted like nothing had changed. It left me confused, irritated even , as if I was reading a book but missing half the pages. I let out a quiet sigh and forced myself to tear my eyes away from him, focusing on the professor instead.

The professor, a tall, no-nonsense man in his forties, cleared his throat and began explaining the new project we were about to embark on. "Today, I will be making pairings for your long-term academic project. You'll be working in groups of four by choice, but for individual projects, you'll be partnered with one person. This person will be your academic partner until graduation, and it's critical you work well together. Both individuals must  pass for either of you to pass."

My attention snapped to the front of the room. This was serious . Being paired with someone until graduation meant I'd be stuck with them for years. Whoever my partner was, we would have to collaborate on every major project. My future grades, my academic success, were tied to this partnership. As an honours student on scholarship my grades determined my very future , meaning whoever I was paired with would have a major impact on my that. 

The professor continued ,"I've already made the pairs based on your strengths and weaknesses, so listen carefully." My heart began to race as names were called out. I barely heard them over the sound of my own nervous thoughts. " Daniel Bright and Mackenzie SaintClaire." My stomach dropped.

My eyes shot over to Daniel, who was already staring at me, his expression just as shocked as mine. For a split second , our gazes locked, and that familiar tension from last night flared between us. I swallowed hard, trying to process what just happened. Of all the people....
