I loved the process of growing up. Going from baby, to toddler, to kid, to tween, to teen, to young adult, to adult, then, if I'm lucky, to elderly. It always made me feel fun. No matter how old I was on the inside, the chemicals in my brain were still that of a child. My knowledge stayed the same, but my logic and emotions fluctuated with each life. I had been goth embarrassingly enough, quite a few times.
But, there is nothing like that first step. It always felt like the greatest achievement to me. It would be the day I gained a small shred of independence.
After Mark adopted me, his girlfriend, Irene Allen, took it quite well. Yeah, same last name. I don't know why they'd choose to date, someone would think they're related or married already. Although, I guess it could save some after-marriage work.
When I was about 6 months old, they got married. While in my crib one night, I realized I could talk, or at least Dada or Mama or Gaga. I ended up saying Dada and my parents went wild with joy. I also learned I had some other relatives. My Aunt Deliah and her husband, my Uncle Spring. My Uncle was a gorilla type-being, but my mother, aunt, and father were all human... I think. They never actually said it out loud. But, in the multiverse, there were many species that escaped their reality.
Oh, I learned another thing! With all the many languages, there were language translators surgically inserted into everybodies brains. I hadn't even noticed Mark was speaking English until I started hearing the most random things ever. Luckily, he had given me my surgery when I was 3 months old.
For another thing, they had different names for things. The Multiverse had a very different name here, they called their collective realities, The Isles.
I also learned more about their society as a whole. The High Council Of Infinexus consisted of 7 Infinexus, and the 8th member was an Artificial Intelligence. There was Prometheus Gray, Cas'Yuul Hare, Steve Bob, Trevor Aphiro, Solu Defyst, R, and a name in morse code that spelled out Death, but the name was in fact the morse code, not the translation. They were all the living members, then there was the A.I. Enoch. Each of them decided all of the laws and settled disputes in the massive Infinexus society. They were kind of like a Supreme Court, but more powerful and important.
I didn't know everything, but I was learning enough. I still hadn't taken my first step, but I was definitely on my way.
I was crawling on the floor, my mother chasing me around while talking about how she was gonna get me, in baby speak. I giggled and cooed as I crawled, desperately trying to speed up, when the door rang. I stopped crawling, and momma stopped chasing me. Mark was at work today, and I hadn't overheard that he or momma were expecting anybody. Even she looked surprised. "Who..." She didn't finish the question, she picked me up in her arms and walked over to the door, only having to take a few steps across our living room. "Who is it?" She asked, raising her voice a bit. "It's me." I heard a voice say. It was a young voice, like that of a teen, maybe 13 or 14? It was a little deeper though.
I looked up to momma and saw a look of shock on her face. "Ody?" She asked through the door. I heard a hum of confirmation. As I studied my mother's face, I couldn't tell if she was shocked, confused, happy, mad, sad, or anything else. It was a mix of everything.
She opened the door and I got to get a look at the man she called Ody, but he was hardly a man. He was a little bit shorter than my mother herself, but it was tall enough to be considered tall. He had dark black hair that looked like it was cut with scissors, eyes closed, in front of a mirror. Ody had sunken, ocean blue eyes, bags under them that indicated he had been crying, or wasn't getting enough sleep, but probably both. Ody was wearing tight jeans, brown leather slip-on shoes, and a dark blue sweater that looked 2 sizes too big. Ody made eye contact with me and he looked as if his entire mind shattered. "Why do you have a baby?" He asked quickly, looking back at my mother.
