Silence descended like a thick cloak of fog as Clementine and the two Lycans stood watch over the heavily bandaged body of Running-Deer.

The wounds from the attack appeared as tended as they were going to be for the moment, thanks only to the skills and determination of the young doctor.

Although according to him it had been more luck combined with some flavor of divine intervention and nothing more.

Nadia moved to stand by Clementine, while Mikhail gave them some privacy from where he stood with his back to the door.

"What is our young doctor not telling Poe?" Nadia inquired, as she looked down at thick bandages that obscured much of Running-Deer's body that literally ran from her head down to each of her toes.

"She appears to have become pregnant from the attack." Clementine replied softly.

Both lycans knew the implication of that particular statement as well as the witch; who was also as keenly aware as they were of the doctor's awkwardness and his purposeful absence while they spoke now.

It was not a good sign at all of what may or may not have become of their deputy.

"Why she was even left alive at all; they have less control of their ... other than even we do." Nadia whispered.

"Leaving her alive meant that those that might have otherwise followed would be slowed or stopped entirely when they found her." Mikhail answered. "While dead, she would have been just another casualty of war."

Clementine gently reached out to rest her hand upon the bandages. "You know, I don't think he really cared one way or the other, to be honest."

Her eyes moved slowly over the mottled cloth.

"But that brings up another problem among many."

As she turned her back to Running-Deer, she took a deep breath to cover her discomfort.

"Perhaps I am unaware of things that I should know by now, but how do your women handle being with child for almost nine months ..." she stumbled for her next words "... without the need to change?"

It was the Lycans turn to look uncomfortable as they considered one another before Nadia chose to reply for both of them.

"That's because we can't and neither will she."
