The night was filled with screams.
Maya crouched in the corner of her small room, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees as she tried to block out the sounds of chaos outside. The royal pack house had been thrown into turmoil, the walls shaking with the force of the battle happening just beyond them. She was only eight years old, but even then, she knew that tonight was different. Something terrible was happening, and nothing would ever be the same.
Her father had left hours ago. He had kissed her on the forehead, told her to be brave, and promised he would come back. He always kept his promises. But her mother... her mother had been different. She hadn’t said a word when she left, her face pale and tense, her red eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. Maya had known her mother was scared, though she tried to hide it. Maya could always tell.
The sounds outside grew louder—growls, snarls, the sickening crunch of bones breaking. She pressed her hands to her ears, squeezing her eyes shut, but the sounds of the battle still slipped through. She could smell the blood now, thick and metallic, mixed with the scent of rain. A storm was coming, both inside and out.
A sudden crash echoed through the house, and Maya’s eyes flew open. She scrambled to her feet, her heart hammering in her chest as she listened. Footsteps, heavy and uneven, echoed down the hallway outside her room. Her door was locked, but the wood was old and flimsy. It wouldn’t hold for long.
“Maya?” a voice called, weak and breathless.
Her mother.
Maya rushed to the door, her hands trembling as she unlocked it and flung it open. There, standing in the doorway, was her mother—bloodied and bruised, her clothes torn, and her face twisted in pain. She staggered inside, collapsing to the floor, and Maya rushed to her side, her small hands clutching at her mother’s arm.
“Mama,” she whispered, her voice shaking. “What happened?”
Her mother’s red eyes, dulled now with exhaustion, flickered to her. “Maya… you need to listen to me.” Her voice was barely more than a rasp, each word a struggle. “You have to be brave. You have to hide.”
Maya shook her head, tears filling her eyes. “No, I want to stay with you. Where’s Daddy? When is he coming back?”
Her mother’s face tightened, and she turned her gaze away. “He’s gone, Maya.”
Gone? The word didn’t make sense. Her father couldn’t be gone. He always came back. He promised.
But before Maya could ask, her mother grabbed her arm, pulling her closer. “You have to hide. Do you understand? They’re coming for me. And when they do… you can’t let them find you.”
Tears spilled down Maya’s cheeks as she shook her head again, fear clawing at her throat. “I don’t understand.”
Her mother’s grip tightened. “The pack… they think I betrayed them. They think the vampires attacked because of me.” Her voice cracked, a tremor of pain passing through her. “But it wasn’t me, Maya. I would never… I tried to protect you. I tried to protect us all.”
Maya didn’t know what to say, her mind too young to understand the weight of her mother’s words. But she could see the truth in her eyes. Whatever had happened tonight, whatever had torn her world apart, her mother wasn’t the cause. And yet, the pack would never believe her. They would never believe a vampire.
The door to the house creaked open downstairs, the sound echoing through the halls. Heavy footsteps thudded against the floor, and Maya’s mother flinched, her grip tightening on Maya’s arm.
“They’re here,” her mother whispered. “Maya, you have to go. Now. Hide in the woods, and don’t come back until it’s safe.”
“No, Mama!” Maya cried, clinging to her mother’s arm. “I don’t want to leave you.”
Her mother cupped her face with trembling hands, her eyes filling with tears for the first time. “I love you, Maya. I love you more than anything in this world. But you have to go. You have to survive.”
Before Maya could protest, her mother pulled her to her feet, shoving her toward the window. The door downstairs creaked again, and voices floated up from below—low, angry voices, voices that sent a chill down Maya’s spine. The pack had come for her mother.
“Maya,” her mother said urgently, pushing the window open with shaking hands. “Climb out, and run. Don’t look back. Just run.”
Maya hesitated, her heart pounding in her chest, but the look in her mother’s eyes left no room for argument. She climbed onto the windowsill, her legs trembling, and looked back at her mother one last time.
“I love you,” Maya whispered.
Her mother smiled, a sad, broken smile. “I know.”
And then Maya jumped.
She hit the ground hard, the impact jarring her bones, but she didn’t stop. She scrambled to her feet and ran, her bare feet pounding against the wet earth as she fled into the forest. The sounds of the pack tearing through the house behind her echoed in her ears, but she didn’t look back. She couldn’t.
She ran until her legs burned, until her lungs ached, until the trees around her blurred into nothing. She ran because it was all she could do. Run, survive, hide. That was what her mother had told her to do, and she would do it. Because it was the last thing her mother had asked of her.
The storm finally broke overhead, rain pouring down in sheets, soaking her to the bone. But Maya didn’t stop. She ran, deep into the forest, into the darkness, and didn’t look back.
The next day, when she returned, the pack house was in ruins. The bodies of the dead littered the ground, blood soaking the earth. Among them, she found her mother.
And from that day forward, Maya’s life became a living hell.
Her mother’s death had been branded a betrayal, the final act of a vampire who had turned on her pack. And Maya, the half-blood daughter of a traitor, was left behind to pay the price.
But Maya knew the truth. She knew her mother had been innocent. And one day, she would prove it.
One day, she would make them all pay.
