The moon hung high in the night sky, casting an eerie glow over the dense forest. My legs ached, my breath coming in short, desperate gasps. Every muscle in my body screamed for rest, but I couldn’t stop—not yet. The sound of paws pounding the earth behind me pushed me forward, though exhaustion was quickly catching up.
Darius and his pack were relentless, their pursuit lasting hours now. I had shifted back into my human form, hoping to navigate the thick trees more effectively, but I knew I couldn’t keep this up for much longer. The wolves, still in their beastly forms, were closing in on me. My body wasn’t made for this kind of endurance.
Branches whipped at my skin, leaving small, stinging cuts across my arms and legs, but the pain was nothing compared to the terror gripping my chest. They wanted me dead—or worse. I had seen the hatred in Darius’s eyes when he set out after me, his intentions clear. He had no plans to simply kill me. No, he wanted to make me suffer first.
I stumbled, barely managing to keep my balance as I caught myself on a nearby tree. My vision blurred with the strain of running, and my lungs burned as I forced another breath. How much longer could I run? I had to find a way out—a way to escape this nightmare.
Just as my legs began to give way, the unmistakable sound of growling echoed through the trees. Darius’s voice boomed out, sharp and taunting, sending a fresh wave of fear through me.
“There’s no running now, half-breed. We’ve got you surrounded.”
I collapsed onto the forest floor, my limbs finally giving out beneath me. My body trembled with exhaustion as I tried to push myself up, but the effort was in vain. My strength was gone.
I heard the pack close in, the snapping of twigs and the crunch of leaves growing louder. Darius shifted back into his human form, his shadow falling over me as he loomed closer.
“Look at you,” he sneered, his eyes gleaming with malice. “Weak, just like I always knew. You thought you could run from us? Foolish little girl.”
I tried to crawl backward, my arms shaking as I dragged myself across the dirt. But it was no use—he was too fast. Darius grabbed me by the hair, yanking me up. The sharp Pain seared through my scalp, and I bit my lip to keep from crying out.
"Let me take over! I'll fight him" Lyra growled, her rage bubbling beneath the surface.
“You’re going to pay for all the trouble you’ve caused, Maya,” he hissed, his breath hot against my ear. “But first, I’ll make sure you remember your place.”
My heart pounded as panic surged through me. I struggled, kicking and thrashing, but his grip was too strong. His intent was unmistakable, his cruel grin twisting with anticipation.
Suddenly, a low, menacing growl filled the air, cutting through the tension like a blade. It was unlike any growl I had ever heard—deep, powerful, and full of raw, animalistic fury.
Darius froze, his eyes widening as he glanced toward the sound. I followed his gaze, and what I saw made my breath catch in my throat.
A silver wolf, larger and more imposing than any I had ever seen, emerged from the shadows. His fur glistened under the moonlight, sleek and shimmering with an otherworldly beauty. He moved with a fluid grace, yet there was something dangerous about him, something primal.
The silver wolf’s eyes locked onto Darius, and in an instant, I could feel the shift in the air. There was no fear in the wolf’s gaze—only a promise of retribution.
Without warning, the silver wolf lunged. The attack was swift, a blur of silver fur and teeth as the wolf tore into the nearest of Darius’s pack. Chaos erupted around me. The other wolves snarled and lunged in retaliation, but they were no match for the sheer strength and speed of the silver wolf.
He moved like a force of nature, cutting down the wolves one by one in a brutal display of power. Blood sprayed across the forest floor as he tore through Darius’s followers, his ferocity unmatched.
I watched in stunned silence, my heart racing as the silver wolf took down the last of the pack. And then, only Darius remained.
He shifted back into his wolf form, his dark fur bristling as he crouched low, ready to attack. But the silver wolf was faster. In a single, vicious strike, he latched onto Darius’s throat, his powerful jaws crushing the life out of him in an instant.
Darius’s body went limp, his lifeless form crumpling to the ground as the silver wolf stood over him, victorious. The forest fell eerily silent, the only sound the heavy breathing of the silver wolf as he turned his gaze toward me.
For a moment, neither of us moved. I was too stunned to react, too overwhelmed by what had just happened. My heart pounded in my chest as the silver wolf slowly approached me, his eyes—intense and glowing—never leaving mine.
I should have been afraid, but I wasn’t. There was something familiar about him, something that stirred a strange, unexplainable feeling deep within me.
He stopped just inches away from where I lay, his massive form towering over me. I could feel his breath against my skin, warm and steady.
Then, in a voice as deep as the growl that had first drawn him to me, he spoke one word—a word that resonated through my very soul.
“Mate.”
The world seemed to stand still, the weight of that single word hanging in the air between us. I stared up at him, my breath caught in my throat as the truth of what he said sank in.
This wolf—this powerful, magnificent creature—was my mate.
The realization hit me like a tidal wave, washing over me with a mix of shock, disbelief, and something else—something more profound.
Before I could fully process it, the silver wolf lowered his head, nuzzling me gently as if to reassure me. His presence, though overwhelming, brought with it an unexpected sense of calm, a promise that I was no longer alone.
And for the first time in years, I allowed myself to believe that maybe, just maybe, I had finally found the one thing I had been searching for all along.
