She swallowed her tears as she looked down at his waxy skin, his sunken eyes. He needed her to be strong. Her eyes burned; her throat felt thick.
He searched her face, as if looking for permission. She smiled down at him and nodded as she squeezed his cold hand.
Relief softened his features. He had found what he was looking for. He let out a quiet breath. His eyes drifted shut. He didn't breathe in again.
She felt strangely relieved as she let the smile slip from her face.
Now she didn't have to hold her tears back anymore.
